NEW YORK – Visitors to the Web site Lordoftherings.net jumped 58 percent in the week ended Dec. 9 as fans checked out previews and other information for the film version of the tale by J.R.R. Tolkien, according to the Internet audience measurement service Nielsen//NetRatings.
The movie The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring opens in theaters on Dec. 19.
Nielsen//NetRatings said Lordoftherings.net attracted 263,000 unique visitors logging on at home during the week ended Dec. 9, up from 166,000 visitors in the previous week.
Surfers spent an average of three minutes at the site, with men comprising of 54 percent of the total audience.
“The Lordoftherings.net site has been consistently attracting surfers since the beginning of this year, helping to build buzz for the movie,” said Jarvis Mak, senior Internet media analyst for NetRatings. “Unlike most movie sites, which only attract visitors during the film release, Lordoftherings.net has developed a loyal fan base who continue to surf the site for new updates and information.”
