It’s been reported that a copy of The Lord of the Rings has been sold for $14,600 at an estate auction in Oceanside, New York.
Why so expensive? This one was signed by Professor Tolkien himself. I was trying to find if there was any note anywhere of the year of this copy, but didn’t find one–so, in theory, these copies could be printed as late as the early 70’s (Tolkien passed away in 1973). Here’s what was written up:
A 3-volume set of the iconic Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien (The Fellowship of the Rings, The Two Towers and The Return of the King), with one of the books signed by the author himself, sold for $14,600 at a two-day weekend multi-estate sale held Oct. 3-4 by Philip Weiss Auctions. The books were in very good condition and all had their original dust jackets.
