One Game That May Rule Them all

Star Wars and Star Trek fans have had to put up with a lot over the years concerning video game adaptations of their beloved series. But after last year’s successful arrival of The Fellowship of the Rings at the box office, it seemed that director Peter Jackson was doing justice to J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic saga, and now fans will actually have a chance to partake in two different gaming series.
At last year’s E3 in Los Angeles, Sierra showed its third-person PC adventure game that focused on the trials and tribulations of the ring bearer, Frodo, and his best Hobbit pal, Sam. Based on the books and NOT the film franchise, this series is well timed but has a very different look and feel than that of Jackson’s world. On the flip side, because this is America and someone owns the rights for everything, Electronic Arts is developing its own series for the PlayStation 2 that is officially based on the film series. In fact, a pre-E3 demonstration of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers game showed off (in stunning detail, I might add) just how closely its world will adhere to the films.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers arrives in November, just after the special edition DVD release, and serves as a warm-up for fans waiting for the second film. While it shares the title of book two, it actually encompasses the events from both Fellowship and The Two Towers, but essentially begins after the party has headed out of Rivendell. More importantly, this game is not so much about Frodo’s journey to destroy the ring, but instead focuses on the fierce battles that Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas experience after the breaking of the Fellowship.
