EA Details Rings Games
Electronic Arts announced that it will publish video games based on The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Peter Jackson’s upcoming film version of J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel, for the PlayStation2 and GameBoy Advance platforms. The games will integrate cinema and gameplay moments based on Jackson’s first Rings film, The Fellowship of the Ring, and its upcoming sequel, EA announced. Both versions of the Two Towers games will be released in the fall 2002, in conjunction with the Two Towers movie, which opens Dec. 18.
In the PS2 game, players will assume the roles of Aragorn, Legolas or Gimli to battle orcs, the cave troll and Saruman. A tactical gameplay system will encourage players to react quickly and be strategic with their selection of characters, weaponry and combat moves. Each of the 16 mission locations will have a close visual correlation to images in the two films. The PS2 game is being co-developed by EA’s Redwood Shores and Stormfront studios.
The GameBoy version will allow players to take control of four characters — Aragorn, Legolas, Frodo and Gandalf — in more than 30 levels of gameplay. This version of the game is being developed by Griptonite Games, an Amaze Entertainment Studio.
