I received a press release from Houghton Mifflin Company last week, and I have been dragging my feet getting it posted. So here it is.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tolkien’s Epic Masterworks
Newly Rejacketed in a handsome boxed set and also available as individual volumes.

“An extraordinary work–pure excitement.”

Written for J.R.R. Tolkien’s own children, The Hobbit met with instant success when first published in 1937. It is the story of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit who led a comfortable and unambitious life before being whisked away by Gandalf the wizard and a company of dwarfs. Bilbo finds himself caught up in a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. A prelude to The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit is an enduring classic for readers of all ages. It is available individually as a paperback, or as part of a larger boxed set including The Lord of the Rings.

The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King make up the three volumes of The Lord of the Rings. Each volume is available individually as a paperback, or as part of a boxed set including both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. This masterpiece tells of the great and dangerous quest undertaken by Frodo Baggins and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the wizard, Merry, Pippin, and Sam, Gimli the dwarf, Legolas the elf, Boromir of Gondor, and a tall mysterious stranger called Strider. It is a story that is at once a classic myth and a modern fairy tale–a story of high and heroic adventure set in the unforgettable landscape of Middle Earth.

About the Author

J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973) was beloved throughout the world as the creator of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. After serving in the First World War, Tolkien embarked upon a distinguished academic career, recognized as one of the finest philologists in the world. He was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, a fellow of Pembroke College, and a fellow of Merton College until his retirement in 1959. His chief interest was in the linguistic aspects of the early English writing tradition, but even as he studied these classics he was creating a set of his own.
