by Mar 29, 2000Books

On June sixth Houghton Mifflin will re-release two of the more difficult to find Tolkien books. Letters and Biography are to be re-issued as paperbacks this year.

This is great news. We’ve had many people asking about these books, and now, quite thankfully, they’ll be readily available. Great reading for anyone who desires to come to a greater understanding of the man behind the myth.

About Letters

More than fifty million Tolkien books have been sold worldwide. This collection will entertain all who appreciate the art of masterly letter writing. The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien sheds much light on Tolkien’s genius and grand design for the creation of a whole new world – Middle-earth. Now with a greatly expanded index, this volume provides a valuable research tool for all fans wishing to trace the evolution of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

About Biography

One day while grading papers, J.R.R. Tolkien inexplicably wrote “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit” in the margin – thereby setting out on the path that would bring him fame, fortune, and the devotion of millions. A veteran of the Battle of the Somme, he was a close friend of C. S. Lewis and an editor of the Oxford English Dictionary before becoming the Merton Professor of English at Oxford.
