Just got the following press release from Eledhwen:
Wanted: Enthusiastic Judges
We are a group of Tolkien fans and fanfic writers who have come together to organise the Mithril Awards for Tolkien Fanfiction. We intend the awards to honour excellence in fiction, poetry and critical essays in English, relating to the Lord of the Rings, the Silmarillion, the Hobbit, and other works by JRR Tolkien. All material freely available on the web and published before April 2003 will be eligible, with the exception of actor fics/RPS. Awards will be made annually in June, and nominations for the first awards will open in May 2003.
The Awards Committee is now looking to recruit willing and enthusiastic judges to help decide the winners of the Awards. Judges will be expected to read and evaluate five or six pieces of fiction, poetry or critical writing per category, in between one and three categories. Please bear in mind these could range from short fics to novel-length stories. These pieces of writing will have been shortlisted from nominations made by the public.
An ideal judge will have an excellent understanding of written English as well as good knowledge of Tolkien’s works, and will have read widely in Tolkien fanfiction. Being a fanfiction author is an advantage but is not compulsory. We are particularly looking for people who have broad general Tolkien knowledge – across the Lord of the Rings (books and movies), the Silmarillion and the Hobbit – and who have no particular bias for or against slash, het, erotic or general fics, though experts in one particular Tolkien book are also welcome.
If you are interested in becoming a judge for the Mithril Awards, please send a brief biography giving a summary of your experience in the realms of Tolkien and fanfiction, as well as your areas of specialist Tolkien knowledge, to email@example.com. Please indicate if there are any genres of fanfic you do not read.
We look forward to hearing from you.
