Twenty-five years after Peter Jackson’s trilogy began, Howard Shore’s complete Lord of the Rings scores are heading back to concert halls on a worldwide scale. Performances of all three films are scheduled across North America, Australia, and Europe through 2027, with tickets on sale now for many dates.
Rohirrim at the Pelennor Fields
Each concert presents the film projected on a large screen while a full orchestra, chorus, and soloists perform Shore’s score live to every frame. Some productions feature 238 musicians. This live-to-film format has been running since 2011, but the current tour covers more ground than any previous run.
If you have not attended a live-to-film concert before: it is a fundamentally different experience from either watching the film at home or attending a standard orchestral concert. The scale of the live performance changes how the music lands, and the visual context of the film keeps the music from floating free of its intent.
Shore built distinct musical worlds for each culture of Middle-earth rather than reaching for a single generic epic sound. The Shire’s themes root themselves in Celtic folk and pastoral English tradition. Mordor’s sound is industrial and largely atonal. The Elvish choral music is performed in Tolkien’s actual languages, Quenya and Sindarin, with texts prepared by Tolkien linguist David Salo and screenwriter Philippa Boyens drawing from Tolkien’s own writings. Shore won the Academy Award and the Grammy for the Fellowship score, and its reputation has only deepened since.
