This role play was originally started by Raven (who is no longer here) and me and to her this story is dedicated. I have copied over her intro originally posted Jun 20, 2007, making a few changes where necessary.

The Mists of Eriador role play is basically a sequel to an earlier one that was written in the Prancing Pony years ago by some fantastic writers called Shadow Over Arnor. This current tale of The Mists of Eriador began At The Forsaken Inn five years after the events accounted in Shadow Over Arnor. Some of the characters mentioned in The Mists of Eriador are active characters that participated in Shadow Over Arnor, and no part of their history will be written or altered without the express written consent of the original character writers. Building characters in relation to any of the original characters is permitted. Profiles of these characters can be found in the Shadow Over Arnor – Characters thread. All of the role plays may be found easily, the links are all found in The Old Grey Mares’ Reading Room on the old board in the Prancing Pony.

For any of the original Shadow Over Arnor or Mists of Eriador writers who return and feel an urge to join, that would be great. Just post your intention to do so here first, as it would be greatly appreciated.

For anyone else; Mists of Eriador is essentially a sequel to Shadow Over Arnor, so many of the characters and the events accounted in Shadow Over Arnor are entwined into Mists of Eriador. New characters are welcome, but a good working knowledge of the characters and events in Shadow Over Arnor is a prerequisite to be able to participate in Mists of Eriador. I myself and Raven only entered into this after several thorough readings of Shadow Over Arnor and half the time we both felt over our head. But I have to say it is as fun as it is challenging to stay within the parameters of a previous RP story as well as keeping it ‘Tolkien’. ‘Keeping it Tolkien’ means to me that no event written here would in any way affect the story as told by Tolkien. It all kind of fits in the empty spaces.

If you wish to join this RP please post your intentions here. I did try to write a summary but it began to get terribly long and so decided to leave it out. For this I apologize.

Mists of Eriador will recount events that happen as the shadow that has been creeping over Arnor and the rest of Middle Earth in the years before the War of the Ring grows darker and deepens evermore.

This story may move slowly at times as writing takes time, which is way I have waited and hesitated to start this again on the new board. Please keep this in mind if you are thinking of joining.

We welcome and invite any questions and comments. Please post them here or feel free to contact me by email.

Thank you and I hope that those of you that just stop by to read will enjoy this.

    Name: Malassuil
Age: 99 (in the year 2995 of the Third Age)
    Heritage: Northern Dunedain

Appearance: Long thick hair that is heavily peppered with silver-grey androughly hewn about the shoulders. Short grey beard blending in with the grey temples. A few small scars could be seen on his bare arms. A large, very prominent scar cut down across the left cheekbone. He is considered tall even by the standards of the northern Dunedain, and quite muscular. His usual attire was his sturdy, yet supple and well-worn dark rust-brown leathers consisting of boots, breeches, and a thick leather sleeveless vest. Over it all he would wear a well-worn dark grey-green hooded cloak that had some few small tatters, unadorned except with a silver rayed brooch on the left shoulder. He was a Dunedain Ranger of the North, shadowy with his movements and deeds and keeping watch in the northlands of Eriador.

Bio: Born and raised in a remote homestead in the rugged North Downs, he didn’t remember his mother for she died giving birth to him. His father was away much of the time for he was often riding far and wide with his company of the Dunedain Rangers. As a boy, he came to live in Coombe north of Bree with a distant relative. There, Malassuil was always keen to learn, and he would watch and learn from the town blacksmith and tanner and other tradesmen that would come to town. He would listen to stories and was keen to learn from others all he could, especially from his father and the other rangers who would come to town and stop the house at times. As he grewn he became skilled with knife and bow, and even more so with a sword. He tended to his training and would become in time, as most young men of the Dunedain did, a Ranger. Through the decades he had befriended some of the other rangers, but to others, he seemed distant. But he was keen to teach the younger rangers assigned to his company what he could, just as he was taught by those before him.

When riding near the highlands of Rhuadur, Malassuil heard rumor of a darkness that had fallen on the lands, a shadow, and now some years later, he was visiting a young ranger named Arkaeth at his home by the Lake Evendim. He was coming home with a shadow over him, of which he talked about much with Malassuil who had come to the lake. He learned that Elendur was slain, Halasian had gone mad, and evil was on the rise in the east. But after this one talk, Arkaeth seemed to brighten as he neared his home. He was to be married, and Malassuil would stay for it. It was a joyous event and for a time the darkness was forgotten. But after lingering long there, tending the house while the young ranger enjoyed his bride, he left again for the north. But the words of Arkaeth weighed on him, and in time, Malassuil decided he would have to go and find other companies of Rangers and learn what they knew. He passed command of the north watch on to a hearty ranger, and set out for the town of Bree…

    NAME: Morghan Lachlan
AGE: 44 yrs. in 2995 of the Third Age
    GENDER: female

RACE: Her mother, Brieta, had claimed to have Noldorian blood and came from the Ered Luin region. Ruark Lachlan was her father, a Dúnedain Ranger from the northern reaches of Eriador. Both have passed away.

LOCATION: Morghna once lived in the Chetwood Forest near the Midgewater. There she lived alone for many years, seeing a few local people who would seek her out her her knowledge of herbs and healing or those who were foolish enough to come seeking charms to cure their woes. Many whispered words had been spoke by those of Bree Hill and surrounding region; some claimed her potions worked while others spoke harshly of a woan living alone. Visitors from distant lands sometimes stopped to see her. When this story began she was at The Forsaken Inn, now she has returned to her hut in the Chetwood.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Fair skinned, but tanned, tall, with a slender muscular build. Her eyes are gray-green and her hair deep reddish brown. Morghan’s coloring is the same as her fathers.

PAST/BACKGROUND: After her parents death (her father in an ambush by orcs, her mother, bitter and lonely on hearing of his death, died from a wasting illness that Morghan could find no cure for), she traveled alone before settling in Chetwood. Friends of her father and mother have been known to visit her small cabin in the forest, bringing news of the outside world and herbs they have picked up on their travels for her to study. She has heard rumors of the darkness spreading across the countryside, but thus far it has not concerned her. Before the story of Mist of Eriador starts, she was found in Ost-in-Edhil by Ewen Thane.

SKILLS: Healing, skilled with a knife, knows how to use a sword and a bow. Has some of the in-born senses of the elfish races, but they are not sharply defined. Her father attempted to train her in the ways of the Rangers, but she showed little interest.

    Name: Halasían

Age: 77yrs. in 2995 of the Third Age
    Gender: Male
    Race: Man – Dúnedain/Lossoth/Gondorian/Rohanian

    Profession: Tracker/Swordsman/Healer

Bio: Learned swordsmanship at an early age from his father Halàrvis, a Dúnedain Ranger of the North who was slain at the same time as Chieftain Arathorn II of the Dúnedain. He rode with and learned all the ways of the Rangers and would visit Rivendell on occasion and studied herb lore there. He sought knowledge from Radagast the Brown and Gandalf the Grey and has travelled far and wide in Middle Earth. He is a veteran of many battles and rode with many armies.

He married Forwycn of Rohan, and she bore one son, Hayna. She was with child the last time seen in Shadow Over Arnor.

Physical description: Shoulder length greyed hair, worn weathered face.

Halasian is a character from Shadow Over Arnor who is a shared character written by myself and Raven (and I think Arrasuil might have written about him in a few posts also). He may be used in writing if kept true to the original character.

Welcome Arrasuil, happy to see you are still interested. I will add more character bios as they are brought forth from the previous story in the old forum.

id be interested in joining! I had a bit of a personal question, but I’m definitely interested – I was thinking of playing a Man of Gondor if possible?

Hello waitingcynicism, nice to meet you, welcome to the boards and thank you for showing interest in this roleplay. Good grief, it’s been so long since I started this that to be honest I had given up on continuing this story when there was no further interest show by the other poster who had expressed interest.

If you are truly interested in writing, here is a link to the old board where this was originally started. ( It should work since I just checked to make sure it was still there. 🙂)

Let me know after you have read it if you are still interested. A man from Gondor would fit.

Yep, no offense at all – it’s just a question I had about your version of middle earth generally that I’d prefer to keep private if possible – I don’t mind asking here if you’d prefer though.

I feel more comfortable playing a gay character, how would you handle that in your version of Middle-Earth? I apologize if it’s too political/controversial.

Wow, never expected this one. 🙂

Personally, I would have no problem, but, and here’s a sticky problem. I’ve been trying to keep this story within the realm of Tolkien’s world, and I’m not sure how you could do it within the context. While sexual orientation has never (to my knowledge,) been discussed in the works of Tolkien, I’m not sure how it would work. It could be mentioned in passing or as a part of a characters’ past but I don’t see how it would work if it became a constant or central theme in your writing. You might be choosing something that could be very difficult to write.

When you brought the question up I remembered reading on the old board an attempt to try and work an introduction of a gay couple into an ongoing role play. I went back and found it and you were the one who tried. The role play in question rather fizzled out, through no fault of yours, there were other factors involved, but I couldn’t get a feel for your writing to see how you would have made your storyline work. I don’t mean to be judgmental, but the opening post you made didn’t really give you an “in” to the ongoing story and it just didn’t seem to “fit.” There was some good advice given to you by one of the writers of that role play on how to do a better intro of your characters, I hope you read it and were trying to work into your writing.

You can try if you wish, but if your character ends up not fitting into the story, I will let you know.

I truly hope you don’t find my thoughts discouraging or offensive for I do not mean to be. This was a tough question to answer and hope wasn’t too difficult for you to ask. I hope I haven’t offended you, if so I deeply apologize.

Not at all offended, no worries there. I was mostly thinking it would only come up in passing.

As for the introduction, I need to go back and reread that but I will.

I was thinking a knight of Gondor, if that could work for where he’s from?

Was browsing this in curiosity and saw your posts. Thought I’d offer: if you wanted to join the Wayfarer’s Inn that might allow you to showcase your writing style in a non-structured RP where you could come and go on a whim and explore how to write the character.

My apologies Hunter for not getting back to this. I will admit that I have trouble navigating this new site and the esthetics are hard on my old eyes. I did quit checking TORC when the spambots were posting. I’m still unsure what my status is on this site as well.

First I must apologize for my absence; I had a lot of things going on in my life and then when I came to Torc a few weeks ago and read the last couple of posts, I realized there was more thinking to do as well.

First, welcome to Torc bahoogasmif, I hope you enjoy your time on the site and join in on RP. 😄

But sadly I don’t think this one will go on any longer. I had been thinking for some time now to have this RP locked, for I had foolishly thought to revive this story first started on the old Torc board. To expect anyone wishing to join to go back to the old board and read not only this one, but also an older Rp on which this story was initially a continuation of, was asking way too much. There is just way too much backstory even for me to keep straight at times. 😟

And that’s really too bad bahoogasmif for there was indeed a place for a bad guy, perhaps even an orc or olog hai. 😄

Hello Arassuil, no apologies necessary for I do understand long absences. Unless you wish otherwise, I will ask to have this Rp locked. I hope you understand why this should end, I will truly miss it and writing with you. You inspired my imagination and I think it helped me in my writing.

Hopefully this won’t be my last Rp, for I do enjoy stretching my brain. I do have a seedling of an idea for one that someday may have some interest for others to join with me, but with the holidays fast approaching I have little spare time. Perhaps in the new year my seedling will bear fruit.

One thing I do miss about the old board was the ability to communicate with another board member without making an email account public.

Same for me Hunter. Writing stories with you has been a wonderful experience! And I agree. I think in honour of Raven it should end and be locked. This story, and the one that inspired it has led to my inspiration in the creation of a whole giant fanfic and family tree stretching back to King Elendur’s time circa 770 3rd Age to 150 4th Age.
