The classic EA Lord of the Rings games just got sharper. A fan developer known as The128ReBits has released a free 4K upscale and reshade project for the GameCube versions of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and The Return of the King (2003), built to run through the Dolphin emulator.
For those like me who grew up with these games, this is AMAZING.. EA Redwood Shores developed both titles as direct adaptations of Peter Jackson’s films, bringing in the actual film cast, including Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Ian McKellen, and John Rhys-Davies, to voice their characters alongside Howard Shore’s score. Both were critically praised at launch and have kept a devoted following in the years since.
The128ReBits ran the GameCube versions at native 4K in Dolphin and built the reshade entirely from scratch. The approach wasn’t a simple blanket filter applied uniformly across every scene. In the comparison video below, you can see that textures are sharper with better-defined edges, and the shadow rendering in interior spaces has been given particular attention.

The developer explained the process in their own words (translated from Spanish):
“Here’s the result of countless hours of trial and error. I wanted to compare the original Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Return of the King side-by-side with the remastering work I’ve been doing these past few months. Technically, the biggest challenge has been treating each environment differently. Scaling the textures of an open world in broad daylight in Rohan is not the same as working on the shadows of interiors. I’ve tried to ensure the tools accurately interpret the different materials: that the metal of the swords looks like steel and that the stone has a textured surface, avoiding the typical flat scaling. All this while always striving to preserve the essence of the 2002 and 2003 games. It’s a project made purely out of passion for the community; I hope you like it.”
