“Then at last an answer came: a storm of arrows met them, and a hail of stones. They wavered, broke, and fled back; and then charged again, broke, and charged again…”
Chapter 7
Helm’s Deep

Oh my gosh! This is incredible!

Stirring, affecting, gripping. To gush thus is a little embarassing, but I have to be honest.

Some of the imagery is breathtaking: the sea of Orcs by lightning flash; the final charge of Theoden. What else can I say? A few times I got chills, something that is happening more and more as I read on.

At this point, without a doubt Book III is my favorite thus far–even though we still haven’t caught wind of what Frodo and Sam are up to. If I have to wait for the Ring-bearer’s story this is a good way to do it. I’m reading much faster, that’s for sure.

I realized soon that I must have been mistaken about the Ents…did they forego their attack on Isengard to come to the rescue? But where is Treebeard? Where is Pippin and Merry?

Eventually I’m gonna have to get one of those Tolkien Encyclopedia’s or something so that I can figure out when everything is happening in different story lines.

till next time, keep thinking,
