The Diary of Elanor - March 26 1432 S.R.
Papa has told us the story! It was quite a long one, but it was wonderful! Why, it explained about everything! It is the story of an evil ring, and a hobbit who traveled to Mount Doom, an awful place, with the help of his servant- my father! Oh, I was about bursting with pride when my father said to Frodo (the ring-bearer): " Do you remember the Shire, Mr Frodo? It'll be spring soon, and the orchards will be in blossom, and the bird's will be nestin' in the hazel thicket. And they'll be sowin' the summer barely in the lower fields, and eating the first of the straw berries and cream. Do you remember the taste of strawberries, Mr. Frodo?"
And then Frod answered:
"No Sam, I don't recall the taste of food, not the sound of water, or the touch of grass. Im naked in the dark. There's nothing, no veil, between me, and the way of fire! I can see Him, with my waking eyes!"
"Then let us be rid of it, once and for all! C'mon Mr. Frodo! I can't carry it for you; but I can carry you!"
"O, Papa!" I cried then, and he rather blushed as I rushed forward and kissed him, hugging him for being so brave. The others followed me and soon there was a whole pile of children sitting on him, telling him loving things, except for Goldilocks, who is only 1, and remained on Mama's lap.
Eventually we settled down, and he continued with the story. Oh, it was grand! I don't think I've ever been prouder.
Today I asked Uncle Pippin about it, for Papa said that he was in the story too, but he only told hi and Frodo's part, so I wanted to hear Pippin's.
And he took me on my knee and told me wonderful things, about ents and Shadowfax, and everything. I do beleive that it was the best story ever. The Uncle Merry came along and told about the Horse-Lords, and the bravery of Lady Eowyn, and the mighty attack of King Theoden. Oh, I don't beleive that I shall find anything else exciting after this!
Mama laughs at my excitement, and says I should have been born a Took, but I rather think that I like being a Gardener's daughter more than I would like anything else.
