Elven Ranger - Chapter 4 - The House of Elrond

A couple of days later Aragorn and Glorfindel arrived with the three little hobbits. Eleniel came and greeted when they had arrived. The hobbits ran forward and questioned her immediately.

"Is he alive?"

"Yes."

"Is he awake?"

"No."

"Will he be alright?"

"He will survive. Though he received a terrible wound, but by the skills of Elrond he will be fine. Now come and rest."

"And eat?" Asked Pippin. And Merry nudged him in the side.

Eleniel laughed at the little hobbit. "Of course Pippin!" Then welcomed Glorfindel and Aragorn home. "Now hobbits, follow me. I'll show you to your rooms, and get some food for you then we can see Frodo if you wish."

Aragorn and Glorfindel walked off in one direction, and the hobbits followed Eleniel in another.

"Now, these rooms are for you. Oh I see food has already been brought up. Good, now you can eat straight away, then I will show you to Frodo." Eleniel went and sat out on a balcony, while the hobbits ate in Pippin's room. She sat there looking at the streams flowing through the trees, and the crashing waterfalls, it was so beautiful. It was so long since she had been here long enough to appreciate it. It was nice to rest now and again, she thought to herself. Now another thought came to her. Would Elrond invite her to his council, she longed to know all the news that would be spoken there. But she wouldn't ask; he would only invite who he thought necessary. There will be different races, from different lands. And they will be important, unlike to her. I'm just a ranger, so is Estel. But he is also the heir of Isildur. So he will be there.

The hobbits walked out to see her deep in thought. She heard their light footsteps coming towards her; Eleniel came out of her thoughts with a start and turned to them.

"Oh you have finished. Good. Follow me." Eleniel stood up and walked down the corridor to the room at the end. She showed the hobbits in, Frodo was lying on the bed sound asleep. They ran over to his side. Eleniel stood there for a second.

"Well, I must go; you know where your rooms are now. And where Frodo's bedroom is. You can find your way around Rivendell for yourselves; it'll be more fun that way." She gave them a wink and then walked out the door.

Eleniel went for a walk through the woods of Rivendell, "Oh no, I forgot to tell the other hobbits where to find Bilbo. Oh well, I'm sure when they stop worrying about Frodo, they will go find him. And I really should stop talking to myself like this." Eleniel walked back to the house and made for the hall of fire. In there she found Aragorn and Bilbo talking.

"Ah! Hullo Eleniel! How are you?"

"I am well Bilbo, how are you?"

"I am well; I hear the hobbits are here. Did you show them where Frodo is?"

"Yes I did. They are there now. I will show you where Frodo is if you wish. I think that they think I am strange though they don't say so. Eleniel laughed, "Maybe I am wrong."

Bilbo and Aragorn laughed. "But you are strange Eleniel." Aragorn nodded he head in agreement.
Eleniel laughed and came and sat with the two. "And what makes me so strange? May I ask?"

"Well it's hard to explain don't you think Bilbo."

"Yes, very."

"Well have a go at it; you two got yourselves into this." Eleniel smirked.

Bilbo sat up, "We are just teasing. You are like our little sister."

"And we wouldn't have you any other way." Aragorn smiled.

"Precisely!" Bilbo laughed and lent back against a pillow.

Eleniel rolled her eyes, "Yes, and I am older than the both of you!" She laughed and shook her head.

"Oh and Elrond asked me to tell you. You are invited to this council. There are elves here from the Grey Havens, Dwarves from Erebor; I was talking to Gloin earlier. Men from the lake town, Dale and Gondor. It is all very interesting don't you think?"

Eleniel smiled. `Good, I want to know more of what is happening.' She thought to herself. "Oh yes very interesting. I can't wait to meet them all. Now come, Bilbo I'll take you to Frodo and the other hobbits. Though Frodo wont be awake for a while." Bilbo nodded and got up from his seat and followed after Eleniel.

Another few days went by, and one evening Frodo awoke. That night a feast was held in his honor, the next day would be the Council of Elrond. Eleniel went to her room and got ready for the feast. Eleniel had finished getting reading when she heard horses and familiar voices in the courtyard. She hurried out of her room and down the stairs, her white dress billowed out behind her and she jogged. Eleniel came to the courtyard and saw Elladan and Elrohir the sons of Elrond hopping down from their horses, Aragorn was there talking with them.

Ah! Elladan and Elrohir are back, I wonder what they have to tell. I can see Aragorn wishes to know also. "Welcome home my lords! What news do you bring from your errantries?" The men smiled to her as she walked towards them.

"There is much to tell my lady, this would interest you too. You also live to help keep peace in the lands." Elladan gave her a little bow. And Eleniel nodded her head politely to the brothers.

"We were sent East over the Misty Mountains, Dol Guldur is crawling with minions of the Dark Lord, they have attacked Thranduil. He has been attacked from other sides aswell, not just the south."

"What of the creature Gollum?" Interrupted Aragorn.

"I was coming to that Estel," Elrohir smiled. Before he continued Eleniel spoke. "Whatever your news, it will be heard soon enough I guess. I heard the Prince of Mirkwood arrived in Rivendell earlier today as messenger for his father. Though, I have not met him."

"Well I see some of our news will already know by Father." They came to the stables and Eleniel led the horses inside. "Oh now! Don't get the beautiful dress dirty Eleniel."

"The stables are clean enough Elrohir." Eleniel smiled and stepped back and let Elladan and Elrohir look after their horses.

"Legolas is here did u say? I had not heard that. Now, what of Gollum?" Aragorn persisted.

"Well they have been attacked, and he escaped, they hunted him as far as they dared. We went further south to see if he had gone that way, but he had not. He seems to have disappeared."

"He is gone!" Aragorn frowned. "Well I'm sure we will hear a lot of things at your father's council, more interesting than I would have thought."

"So we now know Gollum is gone, it all sounded a little strange. And we see that Dol Guldur is massing with orcs. I fear for lorien, though some mere orcs cannot harm it of course. But maybe the Dark Lord will not waste his time yet, he knows its power, or guesses it. Only if he himself comes will it fall. But Dol Guldur's first thought is on its own side of the river, Mirkwood. The east side of the Anduin is dangerous as can be imagined." Elladan stopped and took a bag down from his horse.

"Now tell me what has happened here, who is this feast for? We have been away long enough not to know what is going on." Asked Elrohir.

"I think I can explain this Estel, the feast might be over now, we have been talking for longer than it may seem. But there will still be merry making to be had." Eleniel smiled and Aragorn noticed the knowing twinkle in her eye.

He smiled, "As you wish Eleniel!" Gave a little bow and then walked off.

Elladan and Elrohir laughed when he was out of sight. "I'm sure my sister will be happy at that." Elladan winked. The three walked out of the stables. "Well the feast is for the hobbit Frodo, he has recovered from a deadly wound."

"So he is here. That is well, but what terrible wound had he acquired?" With this Eleniel recounted everything since Bree, and when she was finished Elladan and Elrohir were very impressed.

"Well we knew you were brave, so it does not shock us that you stood against the Dark Lords most feared servants." Than Elladan shook his head and chuckled, "But laugh at them? Did you think it was wise?"

"No, not wise. I didn't think about it much at all. But it was laughable that they thought I would hand Frodo over to them."

"Yes, but they think all fear them except maybe those of us with such strength from the west. Now, go and song and dance and have fun Eleniel and we will go and get cleaned up."

Eleniel nodded and made her way to the hall fire which she now knew would be filled with song. She came in and made her way to Frodo, "Eleniel! Come and sing for us!" Asked an elf. "Maybe later Lindir, I have a friend to see." "You say maybe later too often for my liking." Lindir smiled and took her by the hand. Eleniel smiled and sat down on a stool. "Now I remember that voice of yours which you haven't let us hear for many years, sweet and strange." Other elves agreed with Lindir so Eleniel decided to do as he asked, it was so beautiful in here tonight that she decided she wanted to sing now.

Eleniel picked up a harp and closed her eyes, running her fingers along it, plucking at the strings looking for a tune. She smiled and opened her eyes, she found a tune. She begun to sing softly, then became louder with such a great power in her voice; this is what she sang:

"Doin everything that I believe in
Goin by the rules that I've been taught
More understanding of what's around me
And protected from the walls of love

And all that you see is me
And all I truly believe

That I was born to try
I've learned to love
Be understanding
And believe in life
But you've got to make choices
Be wrong or right
Sometimes you've gotta sacrifice the things you like

But I was born to try

No point in talking what you should have been
And regretting all the things that went on
Life's full of mistakes, destinies and fate
Remove the clouds and look at the bigger picture

And all that you see is me
And all I truly believe

That I was born to try
I've learned to love

Be understanding
And believe in life
But you've gotta make choices
Be wrong or right
Sometimes you've gotta sacrifice the things you like

But I was born to try

And all that you see is me
And I truly believe
And all that you see is me
And all I truly believe

That I was born to try

I've learned to love
Be understanding
And believe in life
But you've gotta make choices
Be wrong or right
Sometimes you've gotta sacrifice the things you like

But I was born to try

Now you have
But you've gotta make choices
Be wrong or right
Sometimes you've gotta sacrifice the things you like

But I was born to try."

The elves about her applauded when she finished, they had never heard the song, and the elves had power in their voices. But it normally seemed soft and sweet, more passive. But Eleniel belted it out with power, and it was beautiful. They were astounded, "you must sing again Eleniel. That was beautiful!" Exclaimed Lindir.

"Not the same song, a new one." Eleniel began again, this song she sang softly. This is for Frodo, she thought.

"May it be
An evening star
Shines down
Upon you

May it be
When darkness falls
Your heart
Will be true

You walk along a road
Oh how far you are from home

Mornië utúlië [Quenya: 'Darkness has come']
Believe and you
Will find your way

Mornië alantië [Quenya: 'Darkness has fallen']
A promise lives
Within you now

May it be
The shadow's call
Will fly away

May it be
A journey on
To light the day

When the night is all gone
You may rise
To find the sun

Mornië utúlië [Quenya: 'Darkness has come']
Believe and you
Will find your way

Mornië alantië [Quenya: 'Darkness has fallen']
A promise lives
Within you now"

Eleniel then looked Frodo in the eyes.

"A promise lives
Within you now..."
