Breathe - Chapter One

Vanwanna always hated this earth but hated it even more when she saw The Lord of the Rings. "I don't belong here, I belong there, in Middle Earth." She didn't see the point of cars, "they make getting places faster, they say. But why are we always in a hurry? Cars, trucks, and planes pollute the air so we will never be able to breathe fresh air." She wished to live in Middle Earth so that for once in her life she could breathe.

It was her first day of school and her last. She headed to her first class, which was science. She sat down next to a girl who was reading. Vanwanna saw that she was reading The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. That was the start of their friendship.

"Hi, my name is Itariel." They started to talk about the movies and book.

"If I had one wish I would go to Middle Earth and be an elf," said Itariel.

"Me too," said Vanwanna.

After science it was off to social studies, she sat down, and class began. During the ever-so-boring rule speech, Vanwanna's head started to burn and her hands began to sweat. Then suddenly she saw the Eye of Sauron. She fell off her desk and hit the ground hard. Everyone was looking and started to laugh at her so she jumped up and sat down. Her head stopped burning when she sat down, but her eyes were burning from the site of Sauron's eye.

Next class was English, as they went though the rules again Vanwanna heard a voice in her head saying, "Hello Vanwanna."

It sounded like Galadriel. "But it couldn't be," She said to herself. "I must be dreaming." She pinched herself, "no I'm awake."

"If you could have one wish what would it be?" the voice said.

Vanwanna did not know what was going on but she played along. "I would go to Middle Earth as an elf... with Itariel as an elf too. This includes swords, horses, and bows and arrows for both of us."

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah, I am sure."

"So be it." And with that Vanwanna fell off her chair again but instead of hitting the carpet she fell on grass. She looked around and somehow she was in a forest. How did she get there? She couldn't remember what happened during class, and she turned around and saw Itariel. Then it hit her, "I'M IN MIDDLE EARTH!"

"Where are we? And what's that?!?" Itariel said nervously and pointed at what looked like Orcs, but it couldn't be, this must be a very weird dream. The Orcs saw them and turned from where they were going and headed towards them. All she could think of doing was tapping her heels together and say, "There's no place like home, there's no place like home. Wait a minute! This is your dream, get up and fight!"

She got up but she didn't have a sword. She looked to the ground and there was a sword shimmering in the sunlight. She picked it up and then turned to the Orcs that were drawing near.

"Get your sword out!!!" yelled Vanwanna.

"My what?" Itariel picked up the sword next to her. "Uh, I don't know how to sword fight! Do you?"

"What? You don't know how to fight either? Well that's not good. RUN!!!" They turned and ran for their lives. Vanwanna turned to see how far the Orcs were. She ran into something hard and fell over.

She looked up and saw Aragorn. She rubbed her eyes to see if she was seeing things, but she wasn't. Aragorn looked down at her then went after the orcs. Itariel ran over to Vanwanna and helped her up. Legolas and Gimli came and helped Aragorn with the Orcs. After they killed them off, Legolas came over and to the very frightened girls that were frozen in fear.

"Man na esselya?" Legolas asked.

"Uh, we don't speak Elvish," said Itariel.

"But you are elves," Legolas commented quizzically.

"Elves?" said Itariel breathlessly. She grabbed her ears and realized they were pointed. Vanwanna grabbed her ears as well to find out she too was an elf. Her wish did come true!

"I am Vanwanna and this is Itariel," Vanwanna said.

"And what are you doing here?" asked Aragorn.

"Well... it is a long story and there are still orcs to be killed so you should go kill them." Itariel said since she wasn't sure how she got there in the first place. Then they heard in the distance a horn.

"The Horn of Gondor!" said Legolas.

They all fled to the sound with Aragorn in the lead. The orcs kept coming so it took longer than they hoped. Vanwanna and Itariel stayed close to Legolas and Gimli knowing that Aragorn must find Boromir alone.

After a while they followed Legolas to where Boromir had died and carried him to the lake and put him in a canoe. His boat fell down the waterfall and disappeared into the sunlight. Then Aragorn turned to the two girls that ran into him.

"Why are you here?" Aragorn asked.

"Well, we have come to help you..." Itariel said but couldn't think of anything else to say.

"Uh, destroy all the orcs and..." Vanwanna said trying to finish Itariel's sentence but couldn't finish her own.

"Help find Merry and Pippin?" Itariel asked nervously. Vanwanna hit Itariel in the stomach.

"No, we must go with Frodo. Hurry! Frodo and Sam have reached the eastern shore." Legolas argued.

Aragorn stood still, looking towards the shore on the other side, seeing the two Hobbits running into the forest. He said nothing and sighs. Legolas stared at him and suddenly understood.

"You mean not to follow them." Legolas said.

"Frodo's fate is no longer in our hands," Aragorn said sadly.

"Then it has all been in vain! The Fellowship has failed." Gimli said gloomily.

Legolas and Gimli walked up to Aragorn who put his hands on their shoulders, "Not if we hold true to each other. We will not abandon Merry and Pippin to torment and death. Not while we have strength left. Leave all that can be spared behind. We travel light. Let's hunt some orc."

Itariel looked upset. "Can we come?"

"It will be dangerous, but if you wish to come you may," Aragorn replied.

"Yes, we wish to come. But we will ride ahead." Vanwanna said.

"Ride ahead? On what?" asked Itariel.

"On those horses over there," Vanwanna said and pointed at two beautiful white horses.

"On those?!? Are you sure?"

"Well good luck to you," Aragorn said then turned and picked up a dagger on the ground. Then he ran off into the forest. Legolas and Gimli looked at each other, grinning.

"Yes! Haha!" Cried Gimli and they ran after Aragorn.

Leaving Vanwanna and Itariel alone, Itariel looked nervously at the horse. Vanwanna told her "Don't worry, they are ours. I wished for them."
