A Promise Broken - By Legolas_girl
"But why Boromir, why must you go? We need you here," she said turning to look at her husband.
He stepped forward and grasped her delicate hand "You know I cannot ignore the summon of Elrond. He says it is a matter of grave importance."
She glanced away "When will you be back?"
"I do not know....soon I hope."
"Go then, Boromir."
Together they walked out to the stable, where his horse stood ready.
Grasping both Ciara's hands as he turned to look at her, he spoke softly "I will return, I promise you this."
Pulling her close, he kissed her passionately.
"I love you, Ciara."
"And I you," she whispered.
With that, Boromir swung into his saddle and rode off.
Ciara watched him till he faded into the horizon.
A few weeks had passed when a messanger arrived with a letter from Boromir.
Ciara went quickly to her chamber and broke the seal.
My Dearest Ciara,
I fear I will not be able to return soon. I cannot tell you where I am going myself and a small company leave Rivendell on the morrow.
Ciara held the note for several minutes, thinking of her husband. His gentle touch, his smile.
Slowly she folded the letter and putting it down said "Oh Boromir, just to see you."
* * *
Time passed and fall turned to winter.
Ciara turned to see her maid standing timidly in the door.
"There is someone to see you."
Ciara followed her downstairs where a shadow stood at the door.
She walked forward and could immediately see it was an Elf. He was clad in brown and had a bow slung over his shoulder.
She nodded, a sense of dread creeping into her heart.
"I am Elatha. Elrond sent me," he paused.
"It's about Boromir isn't it?"
He nodded "He has been killed. I am very sorry my Lady."
Ciara reached out to the wall to steady herself. "Tell me how he died."
"Are you su-"
"Tell me," she commanded.
"They were attacked, he died defending two of his companions. He died like a warrior, my lady, he died honorably."
She looked at the Elf "Thank you, Elatha."
"I am sorry, truly," he then turned and left.
Ciara stumbled back up to her chamber and leaned againist the wall.
Her eyes fell upon Boromir's cloak and she grasped it, holding it to her.
His last words echoed in her mind.
"You know I will return, I promise you this."
It was then the thought came to her.
Boromir would never return, never hold her again, he was gone.
At this, she fell to her knees and the tears streamed down her cheeks.
