The Sun Is Rising - for Helm's Deep

Note: This is for Helm's Deep. I've been trying to put my emotions surrounding the victorious charge into a song several times and failed. Finally, the words have come. It takes its title from Gimli's quote: "The Sun is rising."

Rain and thunder 'midst dying clouds
Battle rages through the endless night
The dimmed sky rumbles long and loud
The black crows of death increase their flight
Darkness has settled, the Night overwhelms
A wave over despair brings us all to our knees
The morning, we cry, never shall come
And if to this doom we were not trapped we should hasten to flee

A light, amidst our dying hope
A ray, a flame, a beacon
A cry, a call, a shout goes out
Hanging gloom be driven
We stand not alone
For Light shall overcome-
The Sun is rising

Too long have we fought in this chilled night
Too long, and too many are claimed
Too dark has it been, with no op'ning in sight
Too little kindling on withered hope's flame
A cloud-filled night, rain obscures the stars
And we are pushed to the brink of defeat
Smoke rises, ash engulfs, once-bright lands be marred
Amidst endless battering we are falling, weak

A light, amidst our dying hope
A ray, a flame, a beacon
A cry, a call, a shout goes out
Hanging gloom be driven
We stand not alone
For Light shall overcome-
The Sun is rising

Rain it may pour
And flames they devour
Life may be no more
Choked by darkened power
Stars they may fade
And wind may grow cold
But all Dark must abate
All Shadow one day be overthrown
Victory unforeseen may rise from darkest hour
And morning may wither the clouds

A light, amidst our dying hope
A ray, a flame, a beacon
A cry, a call, a shout goes out
Hanging gloom be driven
We stand not alone
For Light shall overcome-
The Sun is rising
