On Beren - Luthien's lament

My beloved one, you are dying,
Dying in my arms, your life bleeding away,
And all I can do is hold you and weep my grief
Into your shoulder.
Where are the days gone by,
The days we walked the woods of Middle-earth,
Carefree, unworried, seeing only each other?
Where have they fled, and why did they leave us?
I would endure anything if I could have you back,
Alive and well, to kiss away my fears.
If I am Elven-born, why can I not heal you?
Has our love come to this,
This bitter untimely parting, this sundering of hearts?
How shall I find it in my heart to go on without you beside me?
How shall I find it in my heart to face day after lonely day,
Longing impossibly for your love and companionship?
Beyond the end of time, Beren, I will love you,
But how will you know it?
You will pass beyond knowing, until I join you
At the far end of time.
I wish I could tell you all this,
But you are dying in my arms, your life bleeding away,
And all I can do is hold you and weep my grief
Into your shoulder.
