Why New Line's Handling of Town & Country Should Worry LOTR Fans - Guerrilla-Film.com

"90 million dollars thrown away on a cute little film starring Warren Beatty, Garry Shandling, Goldie Hawn, and Diane Keaton. 90 million dollars New Line will not possibly recover on the film's initial release. With almost zero promotion and now the embarrassment of not having a premiere for the movie, Town & Country will more than likely fade into obscurity as another mismarketed big budget disaster. So why should this worry LOTR fans?"

Here is an excerpt from Anghus' answer:

First off, it shows that no matter how much money New Line puts into a project, things can still go to hell for them. I mean, no premiere? That's like the death rattle for a film. Christ, even Freddy Got Fingered had a premiere. If they let Town & Country sink like this, what could happen to the other two LOTR films if the first isn't a massive success?

New Line has been in trouble for months. After massive firings and changes in leadership, one has to wonder about how efficiently the new management can handle their biggest property. So far, New Line has kicked back and let the fanboy buzz do the marketing work for them. Short of a lackluster teaser trailer and some well leaked shots to Tolkien sites, the brunt of the LOTR marketing is shouldered by TheOneRing.net, TolkienOnline.com, Aintitcool.com, and Coming Attracttions.

Although this may seem like a good idea to some: Letting the fanboys cause a stir which basically costs nothing more than a couple of plane tickets to fly the net's most popular geeks out there. But, do you really want to rely on these sites? Are these the people who are best suited to guarantee a big box office for 3 films that are rumored to have cost 250 million to make?
