J.R.R. Tolkien's children aren't the only people leery of the Lord of the Rings movie.
"Countless fans (some so zealous they harass the writer's family, who want nothing to do with the film) were captivated by the writer's books long before big-budget special effects rendered imagination obsolete. We - I count myself among the Tolkien geeks; I even read the Simarillion - are nervously awaiting the ambitious new trilogy being produced by New Line Cinema.
"The fear is that it will suck, or at best fail to live up to the novels. Given Tolkien's superb prose that needs no enhancement, this seems likely.
"The first instalment, Fellowship of the Ring, opens Dec. 19, 2001. The Two Towers opens December 2002, The Return of the Ring in 2003. The first glimpse of the films was revealed yesterday in a trailer running before Thirteen Days. Such anticipation hasn't been seen since Phantom Menace previews.
"Keep anticipating. This is more of a whiff than a taste of things to come. "
