Only a filmmaker as unique and bold as New Zealander Peter Jackson could even think of pulling off this project. Making three movies over a nearly five year period based on the acknowledged most popular books of the 20th century is an enormous project. To make it even bigger, they will have one of the biggest budgets of all time, shoot all three films back to back, and work with a cast of thousands. The speaking roles alone number nearly fifty, while extras will be in the thousands (it couldn't be any other way with a story of this scope.) Interest in this trilogy has almost surpassed that of the other big trilogy, even though the first Rings movie is not due out for over 18 months!
