Big Red Steers for Stardom. - He's BIG, Red and Cuddly. And a Budding Movie Star.
Janelle Campbell, of Owlcatrazmorepork nature park in Shannon, says Big Red, her south Devon steer that weighs in at more than 2000 kilograms, is a big softie that will love all the attention it gets when it makes a walk-on appearance in Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings".
The film's producers wanted Big Red to go to Hamilton for filming but Mrs. Campbell and husband Ross turned that down, saying the trip would be too stressful for their pet. So the film-makers are going to Shannon. Big Red was breed at Palmerston North's Rosewood Stud 4 & 1/2 years ago and dines on a steroid-free diet of pasture grass and hay.
Mrs Campbell says he (the animal) had passed the world record weight for a cattle beast but she delayed informing the Guinness Book of Records because Big Red is still growing.
David goes on to say that there is a picture included with the article and that the picture shows the Bull being much taller than the woman in the picture.
