Online reports claimed Daniel Radcliffe, James McAvoy and David Tennant were all in the running to play the character, who was portrayed by Ian Holm (pictured below) in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies, and that an announcement was due at Comic-Con. Tennant's forthcoming appearance at the event led some to believe he had already secured the role.
But Jackson, an executive producer on The Hobbit, says they definitely won't have casting news for the San Diego convention.
Jackson told Empire: "We won't be announcing Bilbo for a little while. We're starting to think about casting, but we're knee-deep in the script right now.
"And when we do go to actors, they're probably going to ask to see a script, so we're powering ahead with getting the first draft done. And that's going to take us another few months of writing to do."
