SpiderMan Director Sam Raimi Expresses Reserved Interest in The Hobbit

Entertainment Weekly has further confirmed Sam Raimi's interest in directing The Hobbit... though with a bit more clarification on how he's approaching the situation. Here's the quote from Raimi:

Peter Jackson might be the best filmmaker on the planet right now. But, um, I don't know what's going to happen next for me right now. First and foremost, those are Peter Jackson and Bob Shaye's films. If Peter didn't want to do it, and Bob wanted me to do it — and they were both okay with me picking up the reins — that would be great. I love the book. It's maybe a more kid-friendly story than the others.

Personally, I still think Jackson would be the best choice for The Hobbit. I don't know if Raimi would get Jackson's blessing to direct the film, but it seems probably that Jackson will simply say, "Yes, go ahead and do it--there's no chance I ever will."
