Tolkien puppet show postponed
Dominion - May 25, 2000
Tolkien fans will have to wait till next year to see an Australian puppet stage show of The Hobbit after Melbourne producers said sponsorship had been withdrawn for the New Zealand tour.
Producer Malcolm Cooke said from Melbourne that it was very frustrating that the show would not come to New Zealand as planned, but he confirmed that sponsors would support the tour next year.
The show was to have toured Auckland and Wellington for three weeks in September.
J R R Tolkien mania was hot in New Zealand with Peter Jackson's filming of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Mr
Cooke said. "I am sure that the feeling will not dissipate. I hope that the expectation [of The Hobbit] keeps building."
The Hobbit, which featured 80 giant puppets and one actor, had been a huge success in Australia, Mr Cooke said.
