New York Tolkien Society Celebrates Tolkien Reading Day - Join Heren Istarion for a day of celebration and learning on March 29th!
Heren Istarion, (New York's Tolkien Society), is sponsoring a Tolkien Reading Day event which will be held on March 29th 2003, at Marymount College. Heren Istarion is working in partnership with Susan Jacobson, Assistant Professor of Media, and her colleagues to bring a great day of Tolkien Programming. The event is scheduled to begin at 1pm and will end at 5pm and will be taking place in two of MMC's lounge areas: The Nugent Lounge and "The RAT". Attendees may come and go as they please between the events of the tow lounges. This event is an RSVP only event; please contact Heren Istarion, (contact information below), to reserve your spot!
The Nugent Lounge Readings and Discussions
The Department head of MMC's Writing Center, Lewis Fumcus and an MMC representative will open with an introduction to the day's event along with the Chair and Co-Chair of Heren Istarion Anthony Burdge and Jessica Burke.
A documentary on Tolkien will be shown with intermittent discussion on the subject matter of the documentary. This video/discussion will be followed by readings from Tolkien's works by Heren Istarion Staff : Anthony Burdge, Jessica Burke, Catherine Sparsidis, and Stephanie Kushner.
Susan Jacobson, who is responsible for http://countlessstories.com, will be interviewing Tolkien fans for her documentary as well.
Beginning at 3pm voting will begin for the costume contest. Yes, anyone and everyone can come in costume! When you enter the event area, if you wish to be considered for the contest please register at the table we will have set up there. Their will be several categories: Hobbit, Man, Elf and Other. One winner of each category will be selected plus an overall winner.
From 4pm-5pm there will be a trivia contest! There will be 3 rounds; 1st place winners will go to a 4th round for a grand prize.
The Rat Lounge
This lounge will be dedicated to Lord of the Rings gaming. Here will have gaming demostrations of the Games Workshop Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game and Decipher's Lord of the Rings Collectible Card Game.
Heren Istarion will have Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit readers and teachers guides courtesy of Tolkien's publisher in the US, Houghton Mifflin.
This event is in conjunction with The Tolkien Society: "25th March is to be "Tolkien Reading Day", an event aimed at encouraging the use of Tolkien's works in education and to get schoolteachers and library staff to participate in reading Tolkien to their classes and in their libraries. This has a significance to Tolkien's readers, as it is the day of the Downfall of Sauron at the conclusion of the 'War of the Ring' in The Lord of the Rings."
