Armor maker raises some eyebrows! - Making Armor like Sewing!
I caught this story in the NZ Herald and thought it such a hoot, I published it here for all to read.
Making armour 'like sewing'
Auckland armour maker Warren Ormsby-Green gets some strange looks when he travels by plane.
The master armourer for the Lord of the Rings and the Last Samurai usually wears a full set of armour when he flies to "cut down on excess baggage".
"The reactions I get can be pretty amusing. Some people are very interested, some people laugh and some people can't even look at me," he laughed.
Mr Ormsby-Green was in Nelson last week to run a class on making armour as part of the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology's Spring Creatively workshops.
The 36-year-old, whose skills in shaping metal were in demand around the world, said he had become interested in the armour when most of his peers were playing marbles at school.
He said he was 90 per cent self taught and after training in pattern making he shifted to making armour because it was like "sewing for boys".
