  1. Absolutely love her work. Fingon looks so grim, and Maedhros... Well, he looks like someone who's been hanging from Thangorodrim for a while...

If you liked this picture, you should check out my Chmiel thread

  2. This is my favorite bit of Tolkien story related artwork. Superb.

  3. You captured the emotion perfect. Fingon looks so ernest and determined and meadhros, well, he does look just how you would expect considering what he had been through.

  4. That is just beautiful! The emotion is so real in the picture, you almost wouldn't need to know the story to understand.

  5. I'm glad you did a picture of this. Great image!

  6. The close-up on the action is very effective, it makes the viewer share the emotions of the two characters. I especially love how Maedhros' hand grips Fingon's cloak.

  9. For those who have never read the Silmarillion or those who have not read it in a while (I, myself, am long overdue for another reading !), this is a good reminder that it is a glorious book in it's own right.
I also found that, for me, knowledge of the Silmarillion truly enhanced the whole LOTR book/movie experience over the years. It did a excellent job of "filling up the corners", if I may steal a line from A Long Expected Party, of the histories, philosophies, etc I encountered in the LOTR trilogy.
By the way, to me this is an extraordinary display of talent and interpretation by Ms. Chmiel. The details are wonderful.
The combination of this artist's skill and the reminder that it 's time for me to reread "The Sil" requires that I give it this a well-deserved high rating.

  10. Very haunting!

The expressions are singularly well-done, as was mentioned.

    And Maedhros is just scary!

  11. I almost cried looking at it. The emotions are captured perfectly. Maedhros looks like he's ready to just give it up and die, and Fingon's got the sort of fierce, grim expression you'd expect from someone who's about to chop their best friend's hand off.

  18. Maedhros' hair seems awfully red though, not the sort of auburn or coppery color I imagine. Very good overall, however. Keep up the good work.

  19. I absolutely love this piece, it isn't from the movies, totally from your imagination, and the style and use of medium is definately Tolkien. Very accurate and talented work, I love the small details you have put into the clothes, have you used pen for that? Excellent work!

  20. This is one of my favourite tales from the Silmarillion. I'm glad the illustration is of Fingon's attempt to cut the chain from Maedhros's hand, not actually cutting the hand off! Poor Maedhros! He became my favourite son of Feanor after reading this story. I have one question, though. Feanor had raven-black hair, so wouldn't his sons have had the same? Since this is the second picture of Maedhros that I've seen that portrays him with reddish hair, I figure I must be wrong about his hair being black. Time to go reread that story again!

  25. I really loved this one...especially since this is an original concept and not one inspired from the movie. It will be redundant to repeat how strongly the emotions resound on the faces of the heroes and the colours and the gestures. I especially loved the hand of Maedhros, the one he clings on Fingon with. Such hope and despair in one clasp of the hand!!!

  45. I love this picture for the expression on Maedhro's face. His teeth are clenched and I can all but hear him breathe. If I didn't know Elves were impervious to cold I could also swear he was shivering. It also looks as though he's shed a few tears, I'd like to think in relief.

    Very evocative.

Yeah, I don' think he's supposed to look hot in that portrait. Elves are not "hot", they are fair. Get it right! jk! but still, c'mon.

  55. I LOVE THIS!!! It's pure brilliance despite the fact that Maedhros looks so beat up, but I still love the guy. Absolutely love the portrayal of it all. Nearly made me shed a tear, nearly... And one more thing, no matter how many times I read the Silmarillion I never see it anywhere that it says that Maedhros had red hair. And if any of you know where it is, please tell me what section its in, I'd really appreciate it, TA TA!!!

I just had comment on this beautiful pic as I'm half way through reading The Silmarillion and have turned back to the the page where Maedhros is rescued a couple of times to reread it. It is my favourite part in the book so far and on entering this site this picture was the first one I saw.

  73. Painfully, I have officially abandoned Tolkien Online, due to matters which are best left unsaid.

For those of you who enjoyed my writing, I beg your forgiveness and understanding. Writing fanfictions holds no pleasure for me anymore. I have not, however, given up the arts, as at the current time in my life they seem to be the only hope I have of a future. Thanks to my good friend, I have come to discover www.deviantart.com, and through it, a new obsession and passion for art in almost every form. Coming particularly to the for are photography and photomanipulations. I still write poetry and stories, however, which I will begin to submit with increasing regularity. I do hope that if any of you should be in need of contacting me, you will come and find me at dragonstella.deviantart.com OR email me at stella_wisha@yahoo.com (although you may wish to be sure to put in a subject such as "from a tolkienonliner" as I get a lot of spam)

Several months back, I left Tolkien Online out of frustration and anger. Now I once again say goodbye, and it is only that: goodbye. The same kind of goodbye one says to fourth grade when moving up to fifth, or to being 14 when turning 15.

    Cordially, and forever, yours.

  76. As one who frequents Tolkien's works and has a strange morbid fascination with blood, I must say that this is just incredible. I can't believe how powerful the emotion is. It shines straight through everything, and as an artist myself, I defy anyone who condemns the artwork itself to draw a better one! The detail and emotion on Maedhros especially make me just think "Wow!" His wounds speak of his desperation, and I can definetly see the despair and desire for death. When I read the story in The Silmarillion, I just fell in love with Maedhros, even though I'm less than impressed with his later actions with Maglor and the Silmarils. Fingon, too, looks coldly determined, and as somebody else said, he has that sort of grim, fierce expression one would need if he's about to chop his best friend's hand off.
