One of Chmiel's wonderful illustrations of a scene I have never seen interpreted before. There is a clear innocence in the twins surrounded by the gruesome aftermath of the battle wrought by the two towering brothers. It's very well done.
.. this was one of the pictures that made me want to read the Silm. I wanted to know who these huge guys were, and who the children were. When I found out the little guy with the knife was ELROND... Oh my... I had to find out about these sons of feanor! And that... set me to look in the Silm.
A good illustrator draws you further into the story, and Chmiel's Silm drawings do just that....
Everything's perfect in this picture... Maglor's expression, Elrond and Elros, the background...
*Sigh-sniff*
This is the painting that made me pay attention to Catherine Chmiel in the first place. As NienorNiniel said: everything's perfect in it.
Really captures the moment. I love it. especially, the little details, like Maedhros red, brown hair. One would really have to search Tolkiens works to find out how he pictured Maedhros, or have a deep knowledge of the evolution of Elvish names. excellent
What an amazing painting. You have an immense talent!
This is wonderful! It really captures the moment as Maedhros said and I can't find somwting wrong with it. ![]()
This is the best picture of Elven warriors I have ever seen (and closest to my own mental picture)! Really love how huge they look compared to Elrond and Elros and especially love the armour and Maedhros' hair.
Stunning!
this is beautiful!! now i'm gonna go steal the Silm. from my sis and read it
i had no idea about the scene of the pic (but i do now from other ppl
)
great job!!! makes me wish i could draw like that....ah well. God gives us all different gifts, eh?
celebel
i wish i could draaw so well too! no fair! o wel no use in complaining. GREAT PICTURE!
i read the Silm last night
at least, bits and pieces. you captured the scene perfectly!! just thought i'd let you know
What an amazing picture! Just the way how I imagined the scene to be with little Elros and Elrond. Anyway is Elrond the small one and Elros is the one with the knife, or is it the other way round?
Is this the battle at the havens, where Elwing jumps into the ocean with the Silmaril, but gets saved by ulmo? I remember it now, if I am right. Beautiful drawing! I always imagined it slightly more mystical, but still, brilliant.
Wow.
I love the way this feels, I really love the way Maedhros is red, and Maglor is blue. Makes me wonder if the other 5 sons are colour cordinated as well...
You know what makes this even better, and creepier?
Look at the painting, and imagine what was caused by it - If Maedhros and Maglor killed Elrond and Elros, imagine how much more in Tolkien's world would have changed.
No Numenor. No Elrond. No Last Alliance. No War of the Ring. Nothing that happened would have happened had Elrond and Elros died.... Scary thought.
This picture really captures the scene as I imagined it while reading the book! It is absolutely beautiful!!
Tolkien wavered over whether or not Elrond and Elros were twins. I think the published Silmarillion leaves this implicit, but this is just a minor detail in what is obviously a well researched (E.g. Maedhros' red hair) and brilliantly executed piece.
Very well executed picture!
It's a great picture with high artistic qualities, but I am very critical and won't give a '5' unless the picture really surprises me.
This is still a wonderful picture, don't get me wrong!
very well done!
Stunning. The power exhuded by the sons of Feanor is immense. Great to see Elves portrayed with a dark and menacing side withou a hint of the pounceishness that so often creeps into images of them.
I love the look of wide-eyed horror in the eyes of the little one. It really captures how a small child would react surrounded by such insanity.
I think it would be neat to see the scene from another angle, so we could see the expression on the face of the one holding the knife.
Wow. I've never heard of this scene before, makes me want to read the Silm... I think I will! I love it! :D

One of my favorites. Chmiel is very talented and ought to be better known. Her images make me want to pick up the books and read.
