I like the shading adn detail. They make the characters and background look 3D. Good job bringing out Denethor's favoring Boromir in the picture. You've captured the expressions.

Either I'm going crazy or I see hints of Sean Bean's Boromir in Anke's.
Now, I know that, according to my screen name, RP character, and general personality, I'm supposed to like Faramir more than Boromir. However, Boromir is looking rather smashing at the moment!
How long did it take you to draw this one?
Comment by Lady_of_Rohan - December 15, 2003 @ 10:39 AM
For me he was a good choice as Boromir -- one of the few casting-decisions I didn't have any problems with. If only they had cast his brother as well ...
Took about two days to draw this one. Let's say I'm really inspired and motivated right now

There's a hint of madness in Denethor's eyes, already. They kind of bulge a bit, which adds to the drama. Boromir looks incredibly capable and is very handsome indeed! There's a dividing line between them and Faramir, who stands quietly aside, unnoticed, and one doesn't yet know of his... quality. The lighting, nicely done, one wonders does Anke use picture references for this, or is this from a strong visual imagination?

I don't think ANYONE with talent such as Anke's can be "over-rated". Again, the picture is incredible and the expressions wonderfully capture a moment that Faramir himself seems to have referred to in the books.
Yeah, so I'm VERY biased towards Anke (being she's a dear friend of mine for mnay years now), but still... WONDERFUL work!!!

I'm back from Toronto and this little ranger is on patrol again. There really is no point in displaying rude or offensive behaviour in this gallery. The rating for a zero may be there, but it does not give people carte blanche to use it. Ratings will soon disappear from the gallery as a result of abuse. If you persist in disrespectful behaviour, you will be banned.
Personally, I think this is brilliant art and it deserves a five. I love Anke's style and so does Ted Nasmith. That's all the endorsement I need!

This is amazing, Anke! You're my favourite Tolkien artist. And only two days to do it! You're so gifted!
The shading is really good, and I love the expression on their faces. All the characters are perfect. Denethor is especially good. Your Denethor, Boromir, and Faramir are my favourite off all artists.
Wonderful job! I can't praise it enough!

I am also back from the gathering and met Ted Nasmith there too and he did speak highly of Anke and her work.
She is the next Alan Lee, after all, he isn't getting any younger and it will be nice to see a similar style carry on after he becomes unable to produce anymore himself. Obviously there are differences between them but the style is very similar and a lot of people like it, me included. I also like Ankes visualisation of the book.

Comment by Ranarwen - December 26, 2003 @ 12:21 AM - Rated a 4
I like the way it shows how much Denethor prefers Boromir and just doesn't even look at Faramir (whom I love, btw) but... what happened to Denethor's arm? It looks a lot too short. I also can't decide whether this is supposed to be realistic or more the invented kind of drawing. Therefor only rating two.
Comment by parmatári - January 1, 2004 @ 9:38 AM - Rated a 5
It is strange that when people vote two (as the person above this comment did) and then the rating says five. Either this person pressed the wrong button or this is just a big fat manipulation!!!! Just wanted to tell others what I noticed!!!!
The picture's not bad at all, but I personally don't like it that much. It's a matter of every person's personal view so no offense meant here. The majority of people seem to really like the picture.
Comment by hands-down - January 4, 2004 @ 5:52 AM - Rated a 1
I love the depth this artist always manages to capture - after Alan Lee, she's become my favorite, especially as there are so many Tolkien artists out there that I actively dislike.
Of course, as a raging Boromir-Faramir fan, more is always better.
Anke, I know that as a diehard Faramir-lover, you must be disappointed with his reduction in the movies, but I think the actor could have carried off a meatier role - it just wasn't able to be worked into the movie as it could have been. I think the two actors play brothers very well, especially in the TT extended edition.
