  13. I wouldn't have picked Liv cuz she is going to be like a Xena warrior, not a humble, gentle girl. It's just Liv, that's why. Plus, she looks far too proud and sexy for me to be comfortable. I mean, Tolkien didn't portray Arwen as bold and stunning, just beautiful and ladylike and quiet. As Carolyn says, leave Tolkien's story alone.

  23. I'm worried less about the casting of Liv Tyler as Arwen than I am about what role the character plays in the movie. It almost sounds from the description that Arwen will be playted off as like a rebellious teenage daughter, or a defier of the 'traditional role' of women (which is Eowyn's role-why weaken it by creating two women like that?). Also, I don't think that the love between Arwen and Aragorn should be made obvious until later, but only hinted at, as it is in the book. However, it is my opinion that they should feature her a little more than in the book, but not until the second or third movie. And what fighting seens and horse-riding scenes is Arwen going to be in, since throughout the book she is in Rivendell? Oh well. I'm going to try to view the movie as separate from the book,(which it is of course, or why bother making it?) and then I'll probably enjoy it anyway.

  41. I think that they should have gone for an older actress. Like Terri Farrow from Deep Space Nine. Liv is just too young for the part. And she is not a strong actress. Rumor Mill Says that Jackson cut out the additional scenes of her warrior role part, because she didn't come across the way that he had invisioned. So they stuck to more of a love story. If they keep her lines short she shouldn't be too much of a distraction from the rest of the move.

  45. WindinLothlorien alluded to it above.... I think this is a publicity photo of Liv -- the actress who plays Arwen -- NOT Liv in character AS Arwen. If you look at the photos of Arwen, her hair and make-up are different.

As to Arwen't role. I don't know about the "rebellious daughter" theory, but as I understand it Arwen accompanies Glorfindel when he goes in search of Strider and the Hobbits. She then carries Frodo on the elf-horse to the Ford, where she brandishes a sword against the Nazgul. Is that a departure from the book? Certainly. Will it ruin the movie? I don't think so (my opinion only).

  57. "Famed as the most beautiful of all living things"

That is how the Visual Guide refers to Arwen as, and pretty much how Tolkien portrays her.

For all those of you who said she can't act, I refer you to Empire Records and now, LOTR. If you don't think its good acting, then you don't know the first thing about it.

She is one of the most beautiful things ever to set foot on our world as well...

  77. As Tolkien said about LOTR, "It grew with the telling". This was a really important remark, because I think it reveals a lot about Tolkien's view of literature or any other form of art for that matter. I also think that the ring represents the ultimate Platonic form, resistant to change, inevitable, inexorable, crushingly universal, but incapable of accomodating freedom. Aristotle rebelled against this Platonic form, insisting that the form was only the organization of the content, and content changes....Tolkien, from his historical and literary work on the Middle Ages, was very well aware of this debate. I think that he came down on the side of Aristotle, on the side of unity versus uniformity in art, life and politics. This is why a hobbit is the ringbearer (new content transforms, changes all the calculations.

Such being the case, I don't think Tolkien would appreciate carping about Arwen's expanded role in the movie. A different form needs different content. In the film, Arwen it seems will come to render visual and personalise the whole shift away from the imperishable, the rings (even the elven three), to the world of men, impermanence, mortality, and hope of redemption "outside the circles of the world". The human need for a world beyond ends was the critical theme in the fall of Númenor, the axis of seduction of the Nine, etc., and is absolutely central to LOTR. In the books, if we think how much attention, space and care is given to the world that is slipping away at the end of the third age, the multi-page poems to |Earendil, Luthien, etc., impossible to reproduce affectively in film, then it's obvious that the movie needs to embody this sense of impending and real loss, tragedy, catastrophe (the 'doom' Galadriel speaks of in reference to the arrival of Frodo in Lothlorien). I think that the scene in Rivendell between Aragorn and Arwen, aided by the haunting music of Enya, is one of the most sublimely romantic I have ever seen. The final parting of Arwen and Elrond in the Return of the King promises to be heart rending, and in some way, summary of the whole work.

So guys, let's cut out the Platonic critique. Tolkien in all probability wouldn't appreciate it. The content has changed because the form has as well, and Arwen Undomiel will show us the truth about the end of the third age. Liv Tyler will help her do it beautifully. We have to have faith in the power of the tale. Whatever Liv has done before, LOTR will raise her talent and execution to a new level. As for her beauty, well, as Geothe said, "The only remedy for the superiority of others is love."

  83. She sucked ass in everything else I have seen her in, but she was not all that bad in ttt or tfotr... Thow I dislike that they put her in the "flight to the ford".. It would have been just as a exciting scene without her... They sould not have screwed with that.. To tell you the truth it pises me off... No one should go and seee these films without reading the books first... SWo that they can be pissed off with the rest of us true fans...

    PS.NICE PIC OF LIV

  89. I am SO SICK of having people slagging off Liv Tyler. NO-ONE deserves all the abuse you lot are giving her - is it jealousy, coz I can't see any other reason to dislike her. I do not know her personally, so I can't say if she's a nice person or not, and the same goes for you guys, so you have no reason to say a lot of what you say. Is it Liv's fault the part of Arwen was expanded in the film? If you don't think she's a very good actor then fair enough, if you don't think she's attractive, fair enough, but there is no reason for all the crap you give her. There are actors I think aren't very good but I don't go around dissing them whenever I see their picture or whatever. PLEASE just cut it out beacause we don't wanna hear it. It's just pathetic.

    5/5 for the picture

  91. What do you guys have against Liv Tyler ? Man, she can call me anytime !
Besides she's perfect for this role.

Be glad they didn't pick Sandra bullock to play arwen, that would have been a disaster !

  93. Oh my gosh, you hate Arwen? Then why come here at all, to this Tolkien based website?

I mean, if you hate Arwen then you hate Tolkien and his Middle Earth, so overall you don't care for the Lord of the Rings, etc etc etc.

  95. Not only is this a great picture of Liv Tyler, but she DID a great job of playing Arwen--in spite of what the "film-bashing" Tolkien-purists say! Liv Tyler did a great job acting in the films, she showed real emotion and depth in the role of Arwen! She can do a ten-times better job acting in a film than any of you whiners can do--so STOP your petty griping! I swear, somebody really needs to stick a pacifier in the mouths of all you "Liv Tyler-bashers" so you guys will finally shut up and stop your ridiculous whining! GET A LIFE!!!

  97. I don't hate Tolkien or middle earth - they're both wonderful - but I hate Arwen. And Liv, if anything,, only made it worse. She's ugly like hell and she ABSOLUTELY cannot act!

  99. Who has said Liv can't act ? Then i would like to see YOU ( who ever it was ) playing the Role of Arwen!!!! Maybe you haven't recognized that it is a difficult role to play ... I don't say anything against you if you do not like Liv , because that is your personal taste .. but Arwen , what has she done wrong ? Is it because she is taking away Aragorn from you all ? No , I think she plays absolutely perfect and she is so wonderfull. and she 's soooooooooooooo beautifull i can't tell you.
