A really moving image. Is seems that Tolkien?s was inspired in his own love story to create one of the best love stories ever. This one will never die, as long as his readers keep remembering it, either as JRR and Mary or as Beren and Luthien. Until death do us apart? I don?t think so.
Ok, on the grave it says 1889-1971, but on the hompage it says he died in 1973. Which one is it?
ps I didnt mean to sound uncaring or ne thing i just want to know. I think its important.

Well, it's a nice picture, but what's soo interesting about it? If there's a picture such as this one, I'd like info along with it as well, such as where is this grave. Besides, it isn't art. It's only a picture. Shouldn't be part of the art gallery... I'd prefer it being in some other category. Why not make a new category in this website?? Sounds like a good idea.

In response to Galadrialoflorien, it was JRR's wife who died in 1971 and not Tolkien. He survived his wife's death by 2 years.
I think this is a wonderfully poignant picture showing the way Tolkien felt about his wife - Luthien and Beren, the eternal love story goes on!

This picture brought tears to my eyes - I can't look at it without shedding a tear. It makes me regret never having met him; he was truly brilliant.

for those who can't go overseas to see the real thing,
I'll change my vote. At first I thought "exploitation"; but
perhaps I was wrong.

This is a very touching picture. It is very sad to think about how he won't be able to see his book put to life on the big screen, but I am sure he'd be proud of everyone who put this together.

I think Tolkien was a genius, he had this incredible way of making people feel happy or sad or deeply moved, he was a great man, and yeah he deserves that his work was recognized and admired by many persons such as you guys, maby he left this world, but Im sure he will never leave out thoughts or hearts.

I pay my respects over the internet because I will never get to go there in real life. *Bows head for a moment of silence* Just lovely. Notice the Beren and Luthien. Just beautiful, and touching.

I will never be able to visit the actual grave site... so i need to write this here....
Thank you professor Tolkien for all the tales you have told, i am gratefull for every tear i ever cried and every laugh i ever had reading your books. Thank you for a world to which i can escape to when all lights go out. Thank you for sparking an interest in myth and lore in my hearth ever since i was a child. You have made me who I am today, and in me you awoke the deep, "elven" sadness that sleeps in all our hearts. From you I learned pity and great wisdom, and that is a gift beyond value. I shall not be sad because of your death, I shall rejoice because you once lived. I am too young to have ever met you, but i feel I will one day, no 'not in Middle-earth, nor until the lands that lie under the wave are lifted up again. Then in the willow-meads of Tasarinan we may meet in the Spring. Farewell!'

...thank you. It is a very appropriate addition to this site, and a sweet token of respect for Mr. Tolkien. Rest well, dear one, in love and peace. We honor the divinity that you have lived and shared.

it's so sad.
*sniff*
but it's cool(?) to see the grave of the big man himself.
it's still really sad.

I've stood in this very spot (in 1992), paying my respects to my favorite writer. It was an awe-inspiring experience. He's in a little out-of-the-way graveyard outside of Oxford. He was not allowed to be buried in one of the Oxford University graveyards because he was Catholic, not Church of England. Pathetic religious bigotry still in effect as late as 1973!
But somehow, in this small cemetery, resting among foreigners (many of them other Catholics), this seems so right. It is a quiet, reflective, unassuming place. I am glad and grateful to have been able to visit his grave--simply for what it did for me. I'll never forget it.

Now I feel like crying!!
*snif* *snif*
I turely respect him for giving me a different perspective on life, through his books. And has also inspired me to write my own book.
... I don't know what I was thinking. I must have been cranky that day. Anyway what I said in my previous comment on this picture was rude and I'm sorry for it. Anyway wish I could remove my "3" rating.
Although I do still think this picture should be located someplace else instead of in the arts category.
If Tolkien lived to see us start forums, sites, clubs and movies,I think he would FREAK!!!( In a good way though.)
o y did he have to die?
where is the horse and the rider?where is the horn that was blown?......
this piture still weights my heart heavy...
From a letter written by JRRT to his son Christopher dated 11 July 1972
I have at last got busy about Mommy's grave....The inscription I should like IS:
EDITH MARY TOLKIEN
1889-1971
LUTHIEN
: brief and jejune, except for Luthien, which says more for me then a multitude of words: for she was ( and knew she was ) my Luthien.
From "The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien"
Letter #340
Still a very moving thought and image to me...it always will be. It feels good to know others feel the same way.
Tolkien was a great man, he will live on through the wonderful epic he created. this is really moving image to me.
Thus passes the Lord of Middle-earth...
