I like how Anke paints the scenes which are often not seen done by other people and I love her use of watercolour.

Otherwise very Middle Earthy.
Your rating has been changed due to your insistence that the horse be white. The artiost can choose any colour they like. Shadowfax was actually grey in the books. If the artist wishes to use the books as their source of inspiration, they are welcome to do so...If they choose the films...the freedom to do so applies as well.

ArtfulDodger2006 - that's how we spell it in Canada and Britain ( I can't speak for any other countries). SAme with "Labour", and "valour" for instance.
BTW - the picture is amazing. At first I thought pip looked a bit childish (as in young, not badly done), but then I remembered that he appeared to be a child to the men of Minas Tirith. It can't be said enough that watercolours are _so_ hard to use. It takes a real talent to make such a lovely image as this.

Thats just incredible. To achive that with water colour!?
my horse-people's eye cough out a few minor mistakes in the horse. for example Shadowfax seems to have hardly any withers, and the horses would most likely be seperated. THese are really minor, unimportant details and they don't spoil the work at all. Pippin is awesome! He's so cute!
I don't know how to rate it though, a 4 or a 5, i wish I could say 4.5!
well, Ill settle for a 5

the horses wouldn't necissarily need to be separated. I've seen many stables where the horses are just kept with their halters ties to poles and only separated by a small section of wall.
I really liked the way Shadowfax was portrayed in this painting/drawing; he looks very....kingly i suppose. I also liked the other horse in the stable...he was pretty, too.
anyway, I agree that pippin looks really cut in this picture! he's one of my favorites. yeah so great job and keep up the good work!

The word "Colour", does have an "U", in it. Every English speaking country spells it that way apart from Americans who took the "U", out. Believe it or not, "colour", is the proper way of spelling it, it's just that Americans began dropping the "U", so the whole country decided to keep it that way. There are a lot of other words like this too like "Neighbour", and "Labour", like somebody else mentioned.
The English spell those words that way and England is where the English language came from.

Great job, I'd never do anything like, for one thing I'm no patient enough to render the details so well. Specially the background... I just posted "Mumak!", and as wou can see it has NO background...
I think people should rate your painting not only based on the quality, wich is excellent by the way, but also in the fact that you are sharing with us a piece of your mind and your particular vision of how you imagined the LoTR worlds. I think that "original" fan art is more valuable than a perfect photo-like rendering captured from a film still.

Is great, but still there are very few artists who can correctly represent human anátomy in watercolor. The human figures in this painting seem unreal and almost caricaturesque, while the horses look very natural, if not lively. Watercolor can also achieve brighter colors, but that can be a matter of style, it is a very clean work though. About the composition, it is well balanced, but still Shadowfax is perhaps the figure that less caught my eye, perhaps to have made a better use of white... Still, the anatomy of the horses is perfect, I admire anyone who can portray a horse that well. Good, but not GREAT

Comment by Linteannaiel - September 8, 2003 @ 10:27 PM
Shadowfax is actually silvery, like the book describes! The color palette is very pleasing. I feel as though this is Minas Tirith, it's the reflected light from white walls and stone outside, in uncertain sunlight... ethereal.

And the Shadowfax of the movies looks nothing like the Shadowfax of the books. He was a silver grey. Not white at all. Otherwise...why would there be a 'Shadow' in his name? Remember the books came first.
Well done Anke! Simply gorgeous painting!

Comment by Legolas-Lover - October 3, 2003 @ 9:04 PM - Rated a 4
I think Shadowfax should look like a king of horses. This means he should be grander then other horses. His back should be the height of the tallest man and the horse should portray an air of superioity over other horses. The overall image would look better if the other horse had a saddle and Shadowfax does not. Apart from my grumbleings about the horse the painting is really good. 8-

Not to be picky, just thought I'd let you know. Arabs look very different to the one that played him in the film. Arabs are beautiful horses but I agree, they wouldn't make a Shadowfax.

I agree with iluvpippin77 and chalitodonoso that it is an amazing piece of art but still there should be something that comes a little closer to the shadowfax of people's imaginagion. Meaning a whiter, slightly glistering shadowfax but not in a cheesy way
Comment by parmatári - January 2, 2004 @ 2:42 AM - Rated a 5
Read the book and you will see, he was grey, not white. In a stall out of sunlight, he won't exaclty be glistening either. Maybe in sunlight, he glistened a silver grey in the book and at night, he was like a grey shadow. Not white.
Also, this drawing isn't about yours or any other posters vision of him, it is the artists vision of him and she is certainly entitled to it as you are yours so please respect that.
Comment by Luthien79 - January 2, 2004 @ 4:02 PM

Comment by LadyCoralie - January 2, 2004 @ 7:17 PM
The anatomy isn't totally correct but that's not a problem, it's still a good piece of art. I personally don't like the style though I admire you because watercolours are pretty tough. I know cause I've tried doing something with 'em. Didn't work =) So anyway, what I don't get is why shadowfax isn't white. But we all have our own imagination and that's probably how you pictured him. The colours bother me a little - I think it should be either darker and a little sinister or very bright and friendly. This in-between-thingy somehow makes me wanna look away.
Comment by hands-down - January 4, 2004 @ 6:06 AM - Rated a 5
Shadowfax wasn't white!!!!!!!
How many times do I have to tell people. It is so annoying to see pictures rated down because of the posters obvious ignorance.
In the book, it clearly states that Shadowfax is SILVER GREY, not white. They may have used a white horse in the movies but Anke paints her visions from the book, not the movies.
Comment by Luthien79 - January 4, 2004 @ 2:34 PM
Before you rate something negatively based on your incorrect assumptions, you had best check your facts. Anke is an extremely talented artist who is intimately familiar with the books, unlike yourself. Your comment has been edited. Watch yourself in the future or I suspect Lady Coralie will have you banned.

This picture shows off the unique talent of one of the best LOTR artists, Anke Eissman. Eissman has done dozens of wonderful LOTR masterpieces, and this is just one of them. Eissman has an exceptional talent for making the most of characterization and watercolors. Excellent job!!!

Some of the others really look like they used a computer to make a picture look like a drawing. This is definitely a painting because it has a few mistakes, but that's what makes every actually painting special. Good job. It's also harder to paint than it is to draw with a pencil. {:0)

This is a beautifull picture and far better than I could ever do. My one little gripe? Shadowfax ears are slightly too long for me *shrugs*
Clarificaton on Grey horses and Shadofax in the movies. Every horse that a layman would consider to be white is actually a grey. This is because underneath the hair the pigment is black. There are varieties in colour (I'm a Brit), ranging from "white" to what is known as Iron Gray (the colour of iron suprisingly). With a Dapple grey being somewhere in the middle. However there are certain breeds of horse that are known as white: The Carmargue from France is known as white, as are Lippizaners. Neither are "true white". There are cases of Homozygous white horses, that have white pigments and no other colours. This is different to Albino's who have no pigment. At the moment there are three registered thoroughbreds in the USA at the moment who are Homozygous white.
Shadowfax in the Movie was portrayed by a couple of Horses, all of which were Andalucians I believe. Andalucians are one of the founders of the Lippizaner and are extremely intelligent and skilled creatures, hence their common use in the movie industry. They are not however known as white horses, nor was the "main" shadowfax. If you notice in the shots of the m riding towards Edoras in TTT, at the chest a spot of dark colour? That is a whorl (swirl in the lay of the coat), it is dark because of the dark skin pigments, meaning that........
Shadowfax in the movie was not white but grey.
My qualifications on the topic of horses? Riding and reading for 20 years and I was an international jumping groom for 9 years.
Again, a beautifull picture and I wish I had half of her talent

Please, read what Luthien79 has been saying! He was Silver grey! He was CLEARLY not white! In 'horse' language, there really isn't a 'white'. So the one in the movie would techinically be called 'grey'. Anyways, Eissmann, you have done it again. I love you!. Err, you love, friendly. I LOVED your painting of Eowyn and Faramir at the houses of healing and this one is DEFINATLY one of my favorites. I love Pippin! You portrayed him wonderfully, like a young child, because Pippin was, in fact, one of the younger hobbits in the Fellowship. I love how you made Shadowfax so kingly, yet bend down and humble himself and be so gentle to pippin, its very moving. I am also VERY happy that Beregond is there! He is one of my favourite characters and NO ONE EVER DRAWS HIM!

It takes a real talent to make such a lovely image as this.

my horse-people's eye cough out a few minor mistakes in the horse. for example Shadowfax seems to have hardly any withers, and the horses would most likely be seperated. THese are really minor, unimportant details and they don't spoil the work at all.
Pippin is awesome! He's so cute!

the horses wouldn't necissarily need to be separated.

I think that "original" fan art is more valuable than a perfect photo-like rendering captured from a film still.

)
I find comments like pale and washed out EXTREMELY ironic. Are they unaware of the fact it is a watercolor? (How many more times could it possibley be mentioned =/ ??) I myself found the detail and coloring spectacular! Not many people have a talent for watercolors, and you my friend certainly do!!!

Is great, but still there are very few artists who can correctly represent human anátomy in watercolor. Great job, Anke. I like how you use water colors and blending in this painting. Shadowfaxlooks very realistic (especially his eye)!

I love it, as with most of your art.. it's lovely. The only thing that bothers me, is that Shadowfax isn't white, he's grey.. but otherwise it's great. Hehe.

I don't know ANYONE who can draw horses that well.

I liked it cause its tons better than that scrawny arabian in the movie
Comment by Tanoion - October 12, 2003 @ 1:22 PM - Rated a 5
Not to be picky, just thought I'd let you know. Arabs look very different to the one that played him in the film.
Arabs are beautiful horses but I agree, they wouldn't make a Shadowfax.

One of the best Eissman's paintings. I like the way she picks the scenes that noone else has painted.

The anatomy isn't totally correct but that's not a problem, it's still a good piece of art. I personally don't like the style though I admire you because watercolours are pretty tough. I know cause I've tried doing something with 'em. Didn't work =)
So anyway, what I don't get is why shadowfax isn't white. But we all have our own imagination and that's probably how you pictured him.
The colours bother me a little - I think it should be either darker and a little sinister or very bright and friendly. This in-between-thingy somehow makes me wanna look away.

Again, a beautifull picture and I wish I had half of her talent

the watercolors really give all your paintings such calmness and detachedness, even though they are always full of emotion..

10 for Shadowfax
10 for Beregond
10 for the Artwork Itself
