Is that a photo or a drawing on the cover? I can't tell with how large it is... just curious. Also, what year was this edition published, and how much did it cost then
?

it looks like a photo or a scan, a well used copy too !
it's really interesting to see the different cover art of other editions.

It's a little of both. The model was superimposed with painted elements to give the final effect. This edition was available mid-90's. They could be purchased separately. I know of no "boxed set" for them, but it is entirely possible. The 50th Anniv. covers for The Hobbit and the 3 LOTR books had the icon in this picture, but were available for several years before and after the 1998 50th anniv. It's the last edition before the movies.

Thanks for the explanation on the making of the picture on the book cover. It explains why Bilbo looks just like a fat man, not a Hobbit. Gollum is ok.

You know, Abbot and Costello? "Hey Abbott!!!" Forget it...

The shot captured the folds and lines to show that it is a popular used book. I do not like the picture on the cover. Gollum looks too much like a mummy, and Bilbo looks like some ugly fat man.

it's the 27th Printing of the Ballantine Books edition of the Hobbit printed in February of 1989. the cover art is by Michael Herring, and although i did own the box set, i lost my first copy of the Hobbit, and found this one at a thrift storea few years ago. the difference between this one and the rest from the box set, is that the paper edges are yellow where the ones from the box or white, and the ones in the box do not list the exact printing, or date (except for originally published).
i will have scanned all of my copies of the books, wraparounds, and will eventually have them all uplaoded. even though some of them are worn (like this one) from my reading, i think they will be a good contribution to the website.
