Like I said with the Frodo drawing...I find one of the greatest parts of Ms.Henninger's drawings is her signature. They're kinda hidden in all of them so that they wont take away from the piece. If you look closely, you can see her initials in the tree. Very neat!

Everyone seems a little ticked off that I said I am sick of seeing Legolas pics. In fact my post was deleted and I got a warning! lol

The reason I gave it a 1 is because people are voting 5 only cause they like Orlando Bloom. Im sorry that you all disagree, but I personaly think that if Im deleted for voting low cause I dislike Legolas pics THEN DELET THOSE WHO VOTED HIGH CAUSE THEY LOVE LEGOLAS PICS! Makes sense to me. In fact I would see that as only fair. Time to see if tolkienonline.com's moderators have a double standard.

If you do not like the standards set by Tolkien Online, then you are welcome to post elsewhere. You have admitted yourself that the only reason you gave a 1 had more to do with your personal 'dislike of Legolas pics'. Low balling to bring an artwork's rating down will not be tolerated. Sensible...with the emphasis on sensible...criticism will. There is no discussion entered into regarding comments here jrenckly. This is not a democracy. I'm amazed by the effort of this picture and I think it deserves to be honored. Still... there's something wrong with the mouth somehow. This is an absolutely glorious rendering. Ms. Henninger is obviously the owner of some remarkable talent and she (I think she's a she, from the comments above, but I may be wrong) surely deserves all the high ratings received.
I also found her attitudes & perspectives as pleasing as her artwork. Her willingness to share information and even share her work by freely letting other websites use her property proves that her talent comes from her heart. Gathering that from her emails above have allowed me to enjoy her pix that much more.
Completely separate from Ms. Henninger's talent are many of the love-sick comments we read from Legolas/Orlando Bloom fans. I know they're harmless but I just find them trivial, boring, and often just plain silly. They have nothing to do with the talent of the artist and I sometimes feel like my time is being wasted. It would be nice if those comments could be posted elsewhere and we could stick to the matters at hand. Maybe it's my age (I'm in my mid-50's and have been reading Tolkien regularly for 35+ years in various and sundry states of awareness & perception) but these "letters from the lovelorn" detract from the artist's work and seem, to me, to be almost disrespectful to their talent.

Woah.... usually I'm one with words, but all I can say is: this picture is so... totally...unbelievably...freakin...brilliant... Lady Coralie, it's not a bad thing to be sick of seeing Legolas pictures, but to be honest, isn't the point of seeing artwork like this to view the skill, and time, and effort that's been put into the drawing, not just what the drawing represents. As far as skills, time and effort go, I'm just sorry that there isn't a higher rating than 5; the shading, texture and framework of the face is flippin near impeccable!!
Fuku, you make a pretty good point... but language, mate!! Trust me, on bad days, I usually swear in 50% of my vocab in daily life, but it's not too lady like doing it here! Come on, let's keep it clean guys!

The moderater is being especially strict as people have often given very low scores to images drawn from movie photos simply because they were done from photos. If you have read many of Lady Coralie's comments, she mentions this constantly. She doesn't feel that this is an appropriate reason to downgrade the images.

And I have a question for you--do you seriously think that the images copied from photos are no better than something printed by a color copier? Do you actually *do* any art and understand what is involved? Using that logic, you'd have to say Vermeer's art was not as valid as another's based on the fact he used a camera obscura. Or anyone who uses photos as a basis for their work. Granted, most of the folks here, myself included, who use the photos from the movie for their images don't often take the work much beyond that, but I think that's asking a lot of amateur artists. And that's what most of us are here. If we were all professional artists, I think you would definitely have a point. Just remember that we're all doing this for the love of the story and characters, regardless if they are book or movie based. No one should be penalized because they may prefer one over the other. I think that is Lady Coralie's position, as well.

I have to say to you that we will have to agree to disagree about this particular issue. And I also have to respectfully say that what you were saying was *not* constructive criticism--you were merely stating your own *personal* preference and indicating that it is a superior position.

By and large, the artists' intent with these drawings is *not* to create something from their imagination but to choose an image from the movie that touched them in some way and reproduce it, hopefully achieving something beyond just the photo and bringing something of themselves into it. But to criticize someone's drawing for not being something that it was not intended to be in the first place is not constructive nor is it fair. In fact, comparing these drawings to what can be reproduced by a computer printer is downright insulting.

You need to judge these images copied from photos based on critera such as technical proficiency-- does it resemble the person and is it well drawn?? -- but you're not doing that. You're assuming that the artist is lacking in imagination and creativity simply because he or she choses to copy a photo.
My suggestion is that you not bother to look at or rate the images done from the movie. It's not hard to determine if that's the case--just look at the thumbnail. And if you've read any of Lady Coralie's comments, you'd know what her critera are for judging the images.

I think you missed my point entirely in that you are trying to judge the piece based on something that it is not trying to do when you are asking for originality. I don't think you understand what I was trying to say about these pieces. The only analogies I can come up is that penalizing copied photos for not being creative is like penalizing a piece of expository or technical writing for not having any creative writing aspects to it. Maybe another way to put it is that it's like trying to criticize an apple for not being an orange. But I guess it's a moot point and I'm beating a dead horse here. Good luck to you.
