Is that all? A letter written and signed by J.R.R. Tolkien and all we care about is the signature! Hehehe.

Now that is something that Mr. Tolkien never did! I read it in "The J.R.R. Tolkien Trivia Quiz Book" that I got today.

There's no proof for that letter, it is quite easy to write a letter like this one and say that was written by Tolkien.
And what's so special about this letter, there is not much informations concerning Tolkien's world...
the signature does look like his hand writting but I wouldn't trust...though I'd like to hold a letter he really did write...
I think they are selling it $15 000 USD!

His writing was really messy. I have the 50th edition of the Hobbit, and they show some of the origional writings, and it is imposible to read the script. But, then, my father has a very nice handwriting but his signature is impossable to read. I can believe this is real, the paper is yellow and everything. And, might I add, its done on a typewriter. How on earth did ya get this???

You are not the dumbest.....I stand with you. I have no idea who Mrs.Smith is. We may sound stupid, and everybody may be laughing at us, but, we have a right to know!

Well I don't think that lot of people actually know who Mrs Smith is...I have been a Tolkien fan for a while and I don't!
I don't , and even if most of the Tolkien fans would know something about Mrs Smith, it likely is an aspect of Tolkien's life that never came to my eyes till now like many others, you shouldn't feel dumb.
You know, just recently I figured out what was the difference between Minas Anor, Minas Tirith, Minas Morgul and Minas Ithil!! (still not sure)
Did you know that "Smith" is the most commun name in USA?
Later all,
John Smith

Even now I don't know the difference between the four Minas something...I know Minas Tirith and Minas Morgul, but Minas Ithil and Minas Anor?
I know a huge bunch of people will laugh at me....^_^"

ithil is moon, and anor is sun.
ithil is moon, and anor is sun.
I THINK that Minas Anor became Minas Tirith, and Minas Ithil became Minas Morgul.
When Frodo looks at Minas Morgul, he says: "and this was once the tower of the moon?"

I've done some reading and from what I can gather Mrs. Smith was the Tolkien indexer for the Radcliffe College Tolkien Society. This letter is being auctioned at Christie's and the bidding starts at $10,000!

I think we were all drawn by "The Lord of the Rings" before knowing much about Tolkien. You are not dumb. Mrs. Smith was not mentioned very much in the books or websites.
Let me check the terms in "The Council of Elrond" chapter. Minas means Tower. Minas Ithil (Tower of the Rising Moon) became Minas Morgul (Tower of Sorcery) while Minas Anor (Tower of the Setting Sun) became Minas Tirith (Tower of Guard). I still don't quite know how to pronouce them. I had to see the movie 3 times to pronouce Isuldur and Isengard right.

Yeah, you really are. He sounds nice and Hobbitish. Like his writting style in The Hobbit.
He sig is nice, but why would they put a fake letter up here? Think about it.
