I like the metal effect too. Anne is a good artist and has shown her skill with colour too. Apart from a Frodo one, they all seem to be of Boromir. She ought to try some other characters.

Awesome pic!! To me inthe movie Borormir doesn't seem to have much outward expression. To me you have captured Boromir.

Thank you. Thank you so much. Amazing work! FANTASTIC. I don't care what the people say about his eyes. Sean Bean's eyes are quite dull in the movie so I care not what they look like in this sketch...if sketch it be.
Comment by LOTRfreak02 - November 5, 2002 @ 10:06 PM - Rated a 5
The metal etc is incredibly detailed and seems not be a sketch, but check the cloak and bottom of pic, the detail isn't as sharp there so you can see it is a sketch. Wonderful job! To the artist : how big did you make the original to get that amount of detail in, or are you just really good at what you do

Comment by Finril - November 7, 2002 @ 9:15 AM - Rated a 5
Just wanted to mention something.
i've just seen comments from you slating 2 other drawings from the movie because the artist didn't use their imagination then you praise this one and give it a "5" when it is exactly the same. A copy from the movie. Yes, it is of a less drawn character but you shouldn't rate stuff on the characters portrayed, thats not fair.
What you have done is considered trolling. As i've suffered the same trolling with my own pictures along with some other friends in here and know how bad it feels when people do this to you, we have decided to start reporting those who consistently troll in an unfair manner. I won't report you but I might change my mind if you get into a habit although one of the others might beat me to it. Regulars do notice this fairly quickly.
Please just try to be a bit more fair. I don't want to get at you. I'm asking you nice. I just hate to see stuff like this in here. It puts a lot of artists, like myself, off from submitting anything else.
Comment by Luthien79 - November 7, 2002 @ 2:36 PM
I love the way you put "pencil sketch" on the title, how very modest of you. I don't know what people are talking about "just a picture" it's fantastic!!! He does have a very neutral expression but that just makes me think he's concealing something!

I can only say: I am blown away. When I look at this drawing, I feel Boromir looking at me; I can almost feel the burdens that he carries for his people. I can feel the pride that hides almot all traces of weariness caused by those burdens. That is a true work of art

I know I submitted a message earlier, but I have a question for you. What kind of pencils and paper do you use? Right now I'm only using regular everyday pencils and white printer paper to do my drawings on. Is there something better to use? If so could you please tell me? I'll come to check again later. Love your style and all your artwork! Truly superbe!

P.S: This goes out to all you art fans-I just posted a picture a couple days back and would enjoy and appreciate your constuctive criticism and/or hints, tips and comments on how to make my artwork better. Why is this picture not #1?
Comment by ChrisAnderson - December 26, 2002 @ 8:28 PM - Rated a 5
This is an exact copy of a black and white still of Sean Bean. An exact copy. If you put them side by side, you coudn't tell the difference. I know, because I have the same one on my drafting board as well, but I blew up the picture so I could just do the head. If you find the black and white photo, you will see that the expression in the eyes, every detail, is the same. So if someone says that there is no expression in his eyes, it's because there isn't any expression in the eyes in the photograph.
Galadriel Elanor: Get yourself a set of pencils, say 2b, 4b and 6B. I use a well sharpened 6B. I mean, well sharpened, so there is always a point on it. And you can just get drawing paper, medium, with a a little "tooth", but not too smooth. And draw BIG. Get a bigger sketch pad, not a little one, so you can see what you're doing. Go to an artist supply store and ask the clerks. They'll know.
Frodo is my love: Talent has nothing to do with it. Any artist will tell you that, including a friend of mine who has been a professional illustrator for 30 years. It just has to do with seeing, drawing shapes, and understanding values. If you find the right set of art classes, you too can do this!!! It just takes engaging certain parts of your brain, and disengaging the parts that say, "I can't do this."
This is a superb example of technical expertise.

Comment by Sipitarwen - December 28, 2002 @ 6:34 AM - Rated a 5
Very good pencil work but a simple copy of a photo doesn't make the best art. And it certainly doesn’t have to involve artistic talent, rather technical skill.

Comment by AragornOfGondor7 - January 4, 2003 @ 6:21 PM - Rated a 5
The only negative comment i've seen is that it isn't creative enough, because its just a copy of a photo, but i disagree. Copy is exactly what the artist was trying to do, and did she ever! Its not as if she was attempting to be creative and failed; you must judge it on the artist's intent. My first thought was that it was a photo and not a drawing at all. The shading is incredible, and the metal looks so real, so detailed. I love it.

No nothing else matters apart from to be able to do this you have to be able to concentrate and have a good eye for detail, I thought this was damn good, as getting such a likeness to the character in question is a very tricky thing to do. Alot of the drawings are very close, but I always look at them and think there is something just not right with them...this one was different however. Sean Bean has always been my fave actor and he is captured here to a tee, simple really. Well done Anna.

This drawing is very good. and to be critical if it looks exactly like him or not is kinda silly b/c we all know art is an artist's interpretation of something they see in life. i really like it. i think you did a great job of paying attention to light and shade more than detail, of course its deatiled looking and lovely but when you look at shapes of light and shade rather than looking at individual features or details it really turns out lovely. i think you did a great job with adding detail but just enough detail to get the point across. great job

Comment by legolas*merry*lover717 - October 23, 2004 @ 6:48 AM - Rated a 5
This is undoubtably a great drawing...accurate, detailed, inspired. However, is this how we all envision Boromir now? Does anyone remember what he looked like the first time we read of his perishing at Amon Hen? I remember his regret and weakness, the triumph of his redemption in fighting 'till the last. This is a great prortrait, but it is a portrait of Sean Bean...not Boromir. Perhaps I'm opinionated. But I can't allow the film versions of this tale obscure my personal experience with the books.

It is perfect, and very detailed and lifelike. However, maybe it's just me because I always scorned Boromir's personality, but it doesn't have much emotion. I don't think it's got that spark of magic. But since it IS very good nonetheless, I'll give it a four. The artist has a great eye for detail and shape.

Dawi's comment may have been years ago, but I feel as if I must say this: let me give you a quote from one of the greatest artists known to man: "The most praiseworthy form of painting is the one that most resembles what it imitates." -Leonardo Da Vinci.
(If Anna's drawing is not art, then Da Vinci's certainly wasn't.)

The metal etc is incredibly detailed and seems not be a sketch, but check the cloak and bottom of pic, the detail isn't as sharp there so you can see it is a sketch. Wonderful job!

Right now I'm only using regular everyday pencils and white printer paper to do my drawings on. Is there something better to use? If so could you please tell me? I'll come to check again later. Love your style and all your artwork! Truly superbe!

Very good pencil work but a simple copy of a photo doesn't make the best art. And it certainly doesn’t have to involve artistic talent, rather technical skill.

This is an absolutely wonderful piece of art. I am most handy myself with pencil drawings, and I take special pride in transferring actual photos into my own drawn art. Bravo!

Looks as if its a black and white photograph, so very real, only when you look close enough can you see its an illustration. WOW!! Anna you are an excellent artist and you will indeed go far. This drawing is very good. and to be critical if it looks exactly like him or not is kinda silly b/c we all know art is an artist's interpretation of something they see in life. i really like it. i think you did a great job of paying attention to light and shade more than detail, of course its deatiled looking and lovely but when you look at shapes of light and shade rather than looking at individual features or details it really turns out lovely. i think you did a great job with adding detail but just enough detail to get the point across. great job

Dawi's comment may have been years ago, but I feel as if I must say this: let me give you a quote from one of the greatest artists known to man:
"The most praiseworthy form of painting is the one that most resembles what it imitates." -Leonardo Da Vinci.
(If Anna's drawing is not art, then Da Vinci's certainly wasn't.)
Other than that, this sketch is phenomenal. I find it hard to think anybody can accurately draw LEATHER. I can almost smell the leather when I look at it. Truly overwhelming.

This has got to be the best drawing of Boromir I have yet seen. Keep drawing - it would be lovely to see more of your art.

It looks totally awesome. It looks just like him. Although his outline is hard to see so you can't quiet tell where he ends and the background starts.

Sensational piece of art. You have a gift and have captured essence of Boromir, his strength, and vulnerability. Well done and congratulations.

It looks like a screencap from an old mute movie! It's sensational! It captures both strength and vulnerability!

This is excellent! I love how you have captured the chivalry in his eyes - much better than Sean Bean did for the character, yet something I think Tolkien imagined when he wrote the character! Excellent!
