I have never cared for this particular cover. Bilbo looks like the Hobbit's version of Ralph Cramden.

Okay i know crappy horror novels are popular, but this looks like a cross between Steven King and the Goonies. I imagine ol' JRR not just turning but pulling a couple of G's with the centrifugal force, Although it's not the cover but whats inside that counts, and whats inside is magical

...... than that sucking Woods who doesn't look at all like Frodo. Frodo is supposed to look older than that and is supposed to be a lil plump in the stomach. He's in his 50s, see? Damn Hollywood.

This doesn't reflect the atmosphere of Middle-Earth, nor does it reflect my mental image of Bilbo. Gollum doesn't look like that in my mind either. The artist has considerable ability, but it ultimately doesn't "feel" right to me. They may as well have gotten Boris to do the cover. An illustrator has to go beyond realism to capture the voice of the writer they are illustrating for. It's a tall order, but that's why they chose Alan Lee as a conceptual artist for the film after all. He does it, and beautifully.

about elijah! I also think that Bilbo was overdoing it on the moonpies and the Pepsi on the cover!! Where did Bilbo buy the nasty weave?? The dollar store?? They should stick that piece on Gollum!!!

I also have this boxed set, and I agree, the illustrations stink. I don't know who this Michael Herring is, but he should be banned from ever trying to depict a Tolkien scene ever again. I can't say enough bad things to describe how I feel about these illustrations.

i agree with MITHRIL. you see hobbits are ugly fat little beer and tea guzzling pot smoking homly sobs and Elijah wood (althou he is a good actor) is too much of a pretty boy, I thingk the only one in the movie who looks like a hobbit is sam.(rudy !rudy !rudy!)
oh ya gullum is not nesisarily bad in this pict it is mearly leaning tword a zombei look ( and of course gulloms inslavement to the ring kept him traped in a zombie like state for ever)

The presentation of Bilbo really isn't that bad, though by this time he should have lost a little weight, perhaps. Gollum, however, is truly horrible with his hooked nose blank eyes and brown skin. This was never a hobbit!

Well I surely hope that this Micheal Herring guy is trying to have a sense of humor!!! Or is he trying to sabotage JRR Tolkiens book with that photographical mistake!? LOL, can't help myself from laughing at it though, it is funny! I don't agree with those that say the hobbits are suppose to be ugly, I don't remember reading that anywhere haha! Though they are suppose to be round and hairy, I think that if you put about 20 pounds on Elijah (don't slap me girls ***dodges quickly***) he would make a splendid little hobbit and btw mithrel, Frodo had the ring remember? It made him not age so he didn't look 50!!! ***mutters to herself****

This was my first copy of the Hobbit. I never liked this picture, and that doesn't look like a Hobbit to me anyway. Too shiny and normal. This looks like a twist on Abbott and Costello, precious.

Bilbo looks terrible. He looks too tall and too fat (i know hobbits are supposed to be fat, but this is too much, besides he must have lost some weight by the time he got to the misty mountains). Gollum is definately too tall and he looks undead plus he standing straight. why isn't bilbo wearing the ring?

Though they are suppose to be round and hairy, I think that if you put about 20 pounds on Elijah (don't slap me girls ***dodges quickly***) he would make a splendid little hobbit
and btw mithrel, Frodo had the ring remember? It made him not age so he didn't look 50!!! ***mutters to herself****

Well I surely hope that this Micheal Herring guy is trying to have a sense of humor!!! Or is he trying to sabotage JRR Tolkiens book with that photographical mistake!? LOL, can't help myself from laughing at it though, it is funny! I don't agree with those that say the hobbits are suppose to be ugly, I don't remember reading that anywhere haha! This was my first copy of the Hobbit. I never liked this picture, and that doesn't look like a Hobbit to me anyway. Too shiny and normal. This looks like a twist on Abbott and Costello, precious.

Bilbo looks terrible. He looks too tall and too fat (i know hobbits are supposed to be fat, but this is too much, besides he must have lost some weight by the time he got to the misty mountains). Gollum is definately too tall and he looks undead plus he standing straight. why isn't bilbo wearing the ring?
