Ok, now if I was there, I'd claim myself insane, because I would NOT be there LOL I'd be running away VERY fast lol
this is a cool picture. i like morgoth's look but i think his face looks too gorilla-like. the clouds, lightning, and fire are all a nice effect and it shows the power of morgoth. very nice

I love Ted Nasmith's works! I believe that he is one of the best Tolkien-inspired artists, from what I have seen so far.
I love the use of lighting in this painting.

Breathtaking art. Thank you for a closer look into a world I would love to be a part of.

this is a seriously cool picture. morgoth looks like mondo-economy-size, all-hell's-broke-loose, super-jumbo-mcdonald's-extra-value meal-with-diet-sprite evil. (and that's evil)
fingolfin looks okay too
i agree with blynktook. if i was the position that fingolfin's in, i'd be running towards the nearest insane asylum. mind, i'd take that crazy elf with me. i think he could stand a few months in padded cell.

It's sometimes difficult to visulize the personification of evil ferocity that is Morgoth in a bad mood, but I think Mr Nasmith has created an image which captures the sound and the fury of this fantastic scene.

The foreground leaves me a few concerns though. As noted, Morgoth's face looks a little bit odd. My other gripe is that Morgoth's grip on Grond looks weird; it might just be a trick my eyes are playing at the moment, but does anyone else see what I am talking about? Anyway, Fingolfin is excellent, especially for a Nasmith character. I liked the fire pits as well (are those where Grond fell?) An imperfect score for Morgoth's face.

just that this scares the heck out of me. I wouldn't want to be in that Elf's shoes, that's f or sure. "You're a better man than I Gunga Din!" I love everything about this picture, even if the face isn't quite right or if Grond is not help right, (It sort of looks like it's been welded onto his gauntlet), any way, a five it is and a five it stays.

This is one of the defining moments in all of Middle Earth's history. It is nice to finally see it drawn by someone! I would have preferred to see Fingolfin's face and armor better, and Morgoth's a little less - especially since I didn't picture him that way. But it is still VERY good... Nice job!

Valar are bigger than elves or men, but I think it's too much exagerated here. Even the Silmarils couldn't be that big (Beren had one inside his hand). Anyway, excellent illustration here. Maybe the next one will be the Howe's version?

Does anyone know who drew the cover for the third book in the series Christopher Tolkien published, "The Lays of Beleriand"? I would like to see what people think of that next, in comparison with this picture. Both are excellent, I think most will agree–for myself, I think the art on the book is better, or at least more in accord with the way I picture the battle. Anyway, I will suggest it to the admin.

He is holding onto the leather loop at the base of the handle, swinging it downward, very similar to the way Marvel Comic's Thor holds his hammer when flying.

Even though I have not yet had a chance to read this book I have the say the picture is pretty impressive that Naismith has created. Keep it coming.

What I like:
Great background
Captures the drama of the event very well.
What I don't like:
Is that Morgoth or King Kong in armor? Face is too simian.
The scale of the picture--Morgoth's size. He is so big in comparison to Fingolfin that the elf looks stupid to face alone such a being rather than bravely defiant.
Still, there is something I like about the picture. I give it a four.

I think the quality of the art and technique is excellent so I have to give at least a 3. However, I think Morgoth looks completely unintelligent in this piece and looks a lot more like an idiot troll, which he's not. Fingolfin is okay, but could use more facial expression considering his father was killed by Morgoth. Yes, the lightning is cool. Anyway, I like Howe's interpretation a lot better. First of all, it has more expression. Second of all, it has movement and actually shows the two fighting. The third reason is that I like the way Howe imagines the look of Fingolfin and Morgoth. Fingolfin looks like Conan the Barbarian in this piece rather than one of the glorious firstborn of Illuvator, and Morgoth looks like a big duffus rather than an evil Valar. I also pictured the backround of Howe's when reading the Silmarillion rather than that of Nasmith's rendition, although I must admit his backround looks ***ed cool.

First off, I think that Fingolfin looks fantastic, the best depiction of an elf I have seen thus far. His stance is great and the detail in his armour is stunning.
The background is also very good, and the fire pits are a nice touch.
Morgoth looks ok except for the face as mentioned above, but I doubt I'd ever be happy with a picture of Morgoth's face since I can't even begin to imagine what he'd look like.
Overall, very good picture capturing the moment well, would be a 4.5 but there's no .5s so round up to 5.

I don't think they look mad enough, it's just like the're posing for Ted to paint them, it's not like they realy hate each other or something, not like they are fighting.

There is no life in this picture. There's lots of things that could be improved (composition, perspective, movement!...) and Morgoth looks plain ridiculous! This isn't some evil oversized troll, it is Melkor himself! It's a pity to see such a good painter with such poor results...

Here's the situation: you're stuck in a room with an Orc, a Troll, and a Lawyer. You have a gun with two bullets. What do you do?
Shoot the lawyer...twice.

Personally, I think that Morgoth is portrayed so big is to illustrate the evil power that grew inside of him and to also make it seem more fantastic. Personally, I think he's juuuust right!
But hey, to each his own.
I rate this a 10 for evil portrayel

Great. Excellent. But...
Well if take a good look at Morgoth's eyes... I don't know he looks kinda tired. Angry, strong yes, but tired.
I believe that's the point Nasmith wanted to give. In silmarilion it says that Morgoth when he placed the Silmarils to his iron crown he could not bear the weigth. So that's it? Not quite, he hated the elfs and particularly the Noldor, and now he is under attack by his worst enemies again, forced to come out and fight himself...!
I also believe that Fingolfin is biger than Morgoth because he has the guts to chalenge a Vala, and not any Vala MORGOTH!!!, to a fight to death.

Fantastic picture. It's not how I envisioned Morgoth...it's better! I think everyone who's complaining that Morgoth doesn't look right should remember that he's described over and over as being a "figure of terror." We're talking big league terror here, not just mildly threatening, and this depiction fits the bill, IMO. He had long since ceased to resemble the other Vala in the slightest.
Those complaining about the size are crazy! Morgoth is described again and again as a huge, giant, dark figure, his head even into the clouds! The ground trembles when he walks! Nasmith has nailed the size. The Silmarils do appear relatively large, but this could be due to their bright shine.

You ppl giving this a 0 are very sad. Yes I can find imperfections but what is perfect?
I would have shown Melkor less physical and Fingolfin's armour differently but that is just my taste.
I am judging this on its merits and I can find little fault.
Outstanding.

I agree there's a nice sense of power and evil, but I really don't like his stereotypical fantasy style. There's also no movement in the piece. Morgoth just looks like a big statue. It's still pretty nice.

Over all, excellent, and Morgoth is perfect....but I dunno. Fingolfin just looks...fake, somehow. Not bad, but not as real as I see him when I read the Silmarillion. Still, a great work!
I wouldn't want to be *their* referee...

Yikes! Morgoth is simply frightening! The Fingolfin is sure brave. If I was confronted by something like that, I think I would jump over a cliff....ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I think portraying Morgoth as giant is spot on, Inwe. in the Silmarillion, the form Melkor the Vala took on Ea is compared to a mighty mountain wit its peak veiled in fire. Also he is similar to a balrog in that he is both a shadow and a flame.
However, people are right about his face being too gorilla like, it just reduces him to an evil giant in a fairy tale.. this is Melkor himself!

That is such a good picture. I think the colour usage and the drawings are amazing. I especially like the sword gleaming and the good king arthur figure i think as a improvement tyou could have included the ring that would have been even more better
p.s and Inwe watever u said i think it depends on how the artists sees things and the bigness could represent his dark power

I love the details in this picture! The skulls on Morgoth's armor are a neat touch, and it's amazing the way fingolfin's crest is worked onto his shield even at that difficult angle. This was one of my favorite moments in the Silmarillien and im glad to see it hasnt been ignored.

How on earth does that guy get the fire to look so real? Its like you can almost feel the heat and the fear as Morgoth roars down at you. I'm sure Fingolfin isn't scared, but if I were standing next to him, I might be.......

I have always been a fan of Nasmith's art. He does Tolkien great justice with his depictions of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, and all other Tolkien related characters and events. I love seeing all of the Tolkien stories (which I have read them all) brought to life.

this is not how i would actually imagine the enemy. i always thought of him in human form. this depicts him as an animal and may not make him seem as smart as he actually is. i really like how the simarillis are placed on the crown, crude as the crown is.

Ok, people who give this 0s and 1s:
Why dont you just take a shower, get some tea, grab The Silmarillon, and breathe. Because he could look all big like this if he wanted too, you would know that if you had actually read The Silmarillon. And Maybe get your mum to make you soup, that makes me feel better when its my special time of the month ; )

Well-painted. Personally, I don't really like the way Morgoth looks. I guess when you are one of the mightiest Valar you can change size and shape. Also, this is coming from a person who has never read the Silmarillion.

It looks awesome, in every sense of the word, and it would be great if this wasn't Tolkien, BUT... this is Tolkien, and the picture doesn't quite look like something from Tolkiens Middle-earth. A nice picture, though.

ChYEAH RIGHT ON A COLD DAY IN HELL IT IS!! i mean ok ok ok maybe he was the baddest thing that ever walked the face of the earth(Middle Earth that is)and maybe he did have a lotta anger n all that stuff in him but whatever he was he did not, and as some have said here, an ape or troll or orcish creature. He should have been more muscular(i mean look at those things!)and his face is filled with a maddening rage that i CANNOT see in a Vala, be he Praiseworthy or condemnable. These guys arent HUMAN ya know and that AWFUL expression on his face is from the lowest depths of human kind.I didnt even wait to see Fingolfin cuz i was so OUTTRAGED you can say by this depiction of Melkor. But hey im just saying it like i see it.Others may think differently and like the above comments(Rating 0 ones)not think about it at all.

Morgoth took on a special form to fight Fingolfin.
As far as Tolkien-related graphic art, it doesn't get much better than Nasmith. Great attention to detail, and he uses landscapes superbly to set moods.

i think this is the closest i've ever seen anyone come to how i imagine Morgoth. maybe not so snarly though.

Fingolfin looks like some sort of cheap Hollywood- Herkules

First, to some comments I read...Morgoth could have been that big.
As for the picture...it?s really bad, I can?t believe that Nasmith drew this picture (or maybe I could).
He has the looks of a troll but still he looks more like an ape. I think Omar Rayyan draws better pictures of orcs and trolls.
Also, wasn?t Morgoth holding a maze instead of a hammer?

Perhaps I am a little biased, seeing as how this was always my favorite scene. As others have said, Morgoth oughtn't be an overblown garden gnome from hell. (though that phrase was not used) In addition, Fingolfin looks ... ridiculous. I wonder, looking at him, what exactly is he wearing?
But there are, of course, extremely good points. I think the most important thing was achieved, and that is that the Silmarils and Ringil are the brightest objects in the picture, indicated their importance. The fire and the sky are very realistic.
I just can't get over the fact that Morgoth makes me laugh--definitely not the idea--and Fingolfin's absurd attire.

the scene depicts greatly the power of Morgoth and the splendor of Fingolfin. Rather than a 5 you deserve a 100!!!!
