It seems as if he drew a volcano exploding..
It's the entire 3rd age ended and the downfall of Sauron - not Krakatoa.

My only comment on a great picture.
Landroval, soaring in from behind Gwaihir, would
have made it even better to me.

The Third Age ended with the departure of Bilbo and Frodo and the keepers of the Elven-Rings from the Grey Havens, some 2 1/2 years after the rescue of Frodo and Sam from Mount Doom.
And let's not forget that Meneldor the Swift was there with Gwaihir and Landroval...!

Were the eagles really that big?

They had to be if they could carry Gandalf on their backs :)

This picture made me feel small. Seldom am I so awed. The artistic take on it is most excellent: the eagle appears over a craggy horizon as two small and helpless figures wave for help from amidst the wreck and ruin of the very land they stand on. This is, I believe, the most breath-taking piece of Tolkien art I have ever seen.

As I said before:I think no artist understands Tolkien as well as John Howe!
How can you not be in awe of this painting? It's structure,it's colours,it's all just perfect!!!
Who cares about the title anyway?Never was a rating more easy than with this one...It's not the best piece I've ever seen, but it's not far off! Amazing!!!

and vote a five. I really like this picture. I was happy to see it was one of the ones chosen to be on this years calendar. (2001) John Howe is a remarkable talent. And I always thought the Eagle was that big.

Yes, there are some errors as you can read above, but the painting itself is really great!

Michael Whelan's and Ted Nasmith's depictions of this scene are much better, IMO. But I still like this. I just don't =love= it. And, yes, Gwaihir is far too big.

As has been previously pointed out, this is an incredibly awesome picture. Some small flaws, but these can be overlooked. The sense the picture gives is the exact one I get from the text. This is a whole lot better than some of the pictures put up lately.

A beautiful pic. Why do people think the eagle is too big? Looks fine to me. Hobbits are small so maybe that is why the eagle looks huge.

Most excellent. Yes... eagles big... hobbits small... huge exploding volcano... destruction... heat... darkness... certain death... then out of darknes flys hope.

beautifull picture.
i believe the 3rd age ended with the fall of sauron which occured as a result of gollum "swan diving" the ring in to the cracks of doom.this picture appears as though it was just moments after that incident.
the 4th age did not begin until elrond departed middle earth,a few years later.
as i see it,in a way, time stood still for a brief sweet while.
perhaps a congralatoy gift to our heroes from illuvitar or the valar.

Perfect, dramatic, grand.... a fiver.

Its nice for once to see a picture put up here that doesnt have us all descend into another arguement of what it should look like. ;-)
The fact that nearly everyone has said the same thing indicates how good a pic this is.
I am actually just finishing the last book (Frodo et al have just left Gandalf as he goes off to talk to Tom Bombadil, on their way home to the Shire) and my impression was that Gandalf considered the destroying of the ring the ENDING of the Third age, ie the beginning of the end, which finished when Frodo and the others sailed the "straight road" to the west.
But thats just my interpretation of a excellent book.
As for the pic, well, what hasnt been said that I can say? Only that Frodo and Sam where found on a mound of ash, not really a rocky outcrop. But a soft mound of ash would almost certainly detract from such a dynamic and jagged picture so I will let it go this once :-)

I think that its a great picture. The hobbits are small creatures, and the hopelessness of their situation probably felt like the world was coming down around them. Then these great eagles appear to save them. That last bit of hope must have seemed like a gift from God, and larger than life. Just my opinion. Nice picture.

I think the title is all wrong; the End of the Third Age was when Elrond Half-Elven left Middle Earth and not when the ring was destroyed. And where's the other eagle with Gandalf? Great picture though.

yes, this is a five!!!! but i think that the title is not correct.... the end of the third age was when elrond, galadriel, gandalf, bilbo and frodo left middle earth.... but anyway this pic is wonderful and the eagles have to be so big.... they can carry on people like gandalf for instance..... not only small hobbits.....

so when did the 4th age begin because there definitely was a gap between the end of the 3rd and beginning of the 4th.
check your chronology.

Good drawing, but I think it needs a bit more action going on around the hobbits. Overall I give it a 5 based on detail and it being a *** good drawing.

...But overly theatrical. Was he trying to draw a sketch of the scene for Peter Jackson, or is this going to be Jackson's inspiration? Because, while it is SO very inaccurate according to the book (yes, there were 3 eagles, yes LOTR eagles are bigger than those on our world - eagles fight dragons, remember?, yes they were on a mound of slag about to be overrun by a river of lava from Mount Doom - not on a promonitory about to break off - when the eagles came to get them, yes there are other inaccuracies from the book too...), it is a wonderfully vibrant picture, and it looks like some of the sketches on the LOTR movie site (I'm thinking in particular of the sketch of Gandlaf on the top of the Tower of Orthanc) of scenes from the movie, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see something like this picture at the climax of the third movie!
This event, by the way, is the beginning of the end of the Third Age, which of course did not end until Bilbo, Frodo, and the rest left Middle-Earth and sailed into the west. But the Fourth Age didn't start until later, right? Who gives a rat's a$$, anyways? It's going in my gallery because it's still a VERY good drawing...

Sorry whenever I see a picture that so reminds me of a part of the books I just have to say a line from the scene. I love John Howe's drawings, WONDERFUL PICTURE!! I wish that I could rate it higher than a 5 (You know like the best drawing I've ever seen of this particulary event)

If the Eagles were willing to fly to Mordor, than why didn't they just fly Frodo to Mount Doom? Why did he have to walk?
This picture is excellent though. Howe has an eye for detail.

Overly dramatic. Sam and Frodo had passed out from the fumes and were not actively assisting in their own rescue, if I remember correctly. Colors are nice tho.

this is not the first piece of work (art) i've seen by Howe,.. i have only one thing to say...
i'm really, but REALLy, impressed w/ his works... yes, maybe his vision over the books aren't exactly mike mine, but he has extraordinary talent...!
i also agree w/ Durin's Bane, the title is a bit wrong (mayb mount doom, or somting... ), but who am i to criticize this gorgeous painting...
i have only one request...:

Hey, this is like the "after" of Michael Whelan's "The Eagles Are Coming"! But I think the title is perfect for the image. To answer Prionce_Imrahil's question, Gandalf realized the Ring was destroyed when the earth responded....he didn't know that Frodo and Sam were already at Mount Doom.

They'll be rescued! It's a good picture, scary, but I agree that there were 3 eagles, and Frodo adn Sam had passed out. I also agree about the title error.

Oh fishy how blind you are.......in the books there was frode knocked out and sam only got knocked out wjen they were airbourne....there were multiple eagles but only one was needed to carry them away.....you should consider the things you write about pictures.........this is a brilliant picture to be treated with utmost respect and should not be slagged or harrased with your whining...i respect your decision on the matter but please keep anything bad to yourself...even if you want to show your true feelings....you may make enimies and this picture rocks!
