  1. The medium is not my favorite, but that is the only ill I can speak of it. Wonderful artwork. And yes, he he he, I do wonder which of those barrels contain dwarves!

  5. Yes, I admit it. I like is style. It is simplistic almost naieve. Yet, it often, not always, captures how I picture certain scenes. I especially like the colors here, but I am pretty sure it was colored by some other artist. Tolkien's original works are drawings. (If I am wrong, let me know.) Wes thu hal!

  11. Whenever i see that an art is Tolkien's, I ignore everything else that i was doing and check that art out immediately. His art is so simple and refreshing, which I do love. Not overly burdened with details, about to stifle you, and the colors are refreshing and light. Nice work.

  21. You know, I'm no engineer myself, but one has to wonder what was so wrong with the green ground that they had to build a barge to put the city on... :) Somewhat distant from what I keep reading about Tolkien's love of forests and green hills. :) But I suppose it's not exclusionary. D

  23. Tolkien's wonderful art is always unmistakably his. Yet like all the other work, there is an eerie, empty, and far away look to it. I love his art though. It's a true window into Middle Earth and Laketown must have been something to see. I just wish there is not always a sense of melancholy to every subject. It's a slight feeling, but always present.

Yes! If there's a book of Tolkien's art with good-quality color plates I would love that very much.

Got to rate it a 5 because it's the master's own.

  25. Tolkien sure had a penchant for swan ships. Guess he never got attacked by a swan -- those suckers have a temper.

Anybody got ideas about the wharf piling at the base of the pic above the title? Perhaps its supposed to be a rope that ties off the bottom edge of the image.

The style of the city reminds me of old drawings of the London harbor area.

  29. I am lucky enough to own a hardcover, with sleeve, collection of the professor's art work. Here is the citation for those who are interested.

Tolkien, J.R.R. _Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien_. Boston:
    Houghton Mifflin Co. 1979.

It's a great collection. And my recollection was correct. The good professor drew the picture above, but it was colored by H.E. Riddet for the 1976 Hobbit Calendar.

If you like this one you will love "Bilbo Comes to the Huts of the Raft Elves" and "Bilbo Woke with the early sun in his eyes."

By the way, Lanklamenyn, don't fret the error. We all knew what you meant. Boy, I'd hate to think the amount of posts I would generate, if everyone picked on my typos etc.

I know we now have the no rating option thanks to a recent debate, but I like this painting so much I think I will vote again (And risk the wrath of the necromancer.)

  33. As "Gastbona" has voted twice, I suppose it's all right
for me to do so too.

I hope I've made clear my displeasure with the "multi-
ple voting" system. As there is now a "No Rating (com-
ment only)" option, there was no reason for "gastbona"
to cast a second vote. If one can do it, so can others.

Never liked this painting too much anyway. Tolkien was
an amateur in the truest sense of the word.

Be glad I didn't post a "0". If this happens again, I shall.

  39. "Tolkien was an amateur in the truest sense of the word."

Yes, you are right; the "truest" sense of the word would go back to its derivation from the latin "amare," which as you know means "to love." An "amateur" therefore is someone who engages in an activity out of love. That would accurately describe Tolkien as artist.

  77. I also am a fan of Tolkien's art style... I find it very amusing that he was such an intelligent man and did not find it beneath himself to make illistrations for his own writings. Many writers do not do this. I think he had fun with his drawings and his style is simple yet produces good art work. --for someone who is known as a writer he is also a nice artist.

It is fun to see how he pictured his world.

TOLKIEN WAS AN AMATUER IN THE TRUEST SENSE OF THE WORD???? ARE YOU INSANE????

You should be kicked outa this site and never allowed back. WHY IN THE WORLD ARE YOU HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE. Tolkien was not an amature, Tolkien was what all others are judged against. How could he be an amature at drawing his own paintings. LOL what an idiot "RWeiss" is
