Master Frodo - Sam Gamgee's Sonnet

That day the wizard bade me serve you well,
To follow you where-e'er the way should go,
I went with joy to see where Elves might dwell,
Hard work I'd mind not to be honoured so.

But when the sorrows became plain to view,
That evil wrought for you in malice sheer,
I felt my soul forget all else but you,
To save my master, more than life now dear.

I think I never rightly understood,
How vast a spirit my kind master had.
I owe him all I have in life of good;
He grieved - but he left no one to be sad.

My life now holds but one last bliss in store -
To see your face and touch your hand once more.

  1. That really is Sam. You did a good job portraying him and his duties. I read your other poem, too. Unfortunately, it didn't make it to the homepage.

Readers, remember to check back to the 2nd or 3rd page of the Reading Room, because I just saw many new articles published.

  11. You captured the form of the sonnet, 14 lines of iambic pentamenter with a patterned rhyme scheme, showing that you know poet-craft. But it is more than craft.

I just finished looking up "poetry" in my old Webster's dictionary (I keep a copy handy in both places where I write). It says, paraphrasing a litle, that poetry is a writing that expresses a concentrated awareness of experience in language that is chosen and arranged to create a specific emotional response through meaning, sound and rhythm.

Well, you did it. This is poetry. I lked it. Hope you do more. Best regards - Chathol-linn Blade-singer

  15. This is so very beautiful. It makes my heart ache for Sam... Oh, that darn ending just tears me up every time! I love the way your poem shows the evolution of the quest and of Sam's love for Frodo --that special, intense, indescribable love. Thank you so much for this poem.

  17. This poem is very concise and yet soo very powerful! You hit the key/core elements of Sam with regard to Frodo! Each stage is present. I think your last sentence sums it up for me. Really well done!!

I needed a sonnet for a creative writing class, and I happended upon this one by Google-ing "Lord of the Rings Sonnet". I amusing it for my class.

I cannot give higher praise for such a poem. Well done! :)
