Alone - Into Mordor

A night of festive splendour
And then its glories gone -
A kindred spirit left me
And I was all alone.

Once there was a time so carefree!
Once there was such song and joy!
Once there was a brightness hoped for!
Once I was a boy!

A tale of age-old evil,
A fearful danger shown,
A journey to be taken,
And I must go alone.

May there be a few to trust to!
May there be some hand that's strong!
May there be some hope to look to!
One to come along!

I fear the wide, vast spaces,
I fear the wild unknown,
I fear the pathless desert,
I fear to be alone.

Could there be a faithful friendship?
Could there be a loving hand?
Could there be a help and comfort
In this hopeless land?

There's nowhere I can turn to,
And way ahead there's none -
For darkness is about me
And I am all alone.

  1. I like it. It sounds like a song, and you did a good job showing the feelings of going into Mordor.

  3. This is the reason I cry at the beginning of the movie, during the happy parts for crying out loud! Because so soon it is all over. I love how this poem contrasts the simplicity and joy of Frodo's life "before" with what so abruptly comes "after". I love how it illustrates his alone-ness...and how, without saying a word about him directly, makes us all so grateful that Frodo has a Sam!

  5. TrueHobbit, This is wonderful! It really takes my breath away!
It pulls out so much of Fordo's inner feelings: his fears, hopes, longings, and despair. I can even feel his loss of innocence.
    It is beautiful.

  7. ConnieMarie and CaMinx put it perfectly - took the words right out of my mouth. I love the style that you used, using the same few words at the beginning of each stanza. Marvellous. Wonderful!

  11. Again, another excellent piece of writing IMHO. thought this mirrored the feelings i had when reading the book, trying to empathise with the characters on their lonely journey into mordor.
I look forward to reading more from you in the future.
