In a past article, we discussed the possibility of Aragorn (Viggo Mortenson) returning to Middle Earth. In a recent interview with Movie Web, Mortenson discussed his possible return: (full article click here)
We had the opportunity to speak with Viggo Mortenson, the actor who portrayed Aragorn/Strider in the film, this weekend while he was promoting his new movie The Road. We asked Mortenson if he would be interested in returning to his role in The Hobbit, if the filmmakers were able to find away to include his character. The actor stated that he had a lot of fun making the first three films and would love to return for more. He went on to say that his understanding was that the filmmakers are trying to find a way to incorporate many of the actors from the first trilogy, even some who's characters do not appear in the actual novel, into the new films. He also stated how much he loved working with the original cast and crew, how much he loved shooting in New Zealand and how much he would really enjoy returning one more time.
The fact that the filmmakers are trying to incorporate much of the old team is something we should take as a good omen, for not only does it give us the possibility of appendices being brought to life on the big screen, but it also bears well for the movie's success at the box office -- the general public would be more likely to go see a film that contains heroes they already know and love so much.
Here's hoping!

I think that would be really cool. I mean as long as we stay true to the feeling of the story, I'm all for adding in a few cherished heroes.

Hobbits with the same old cast my foot!! Oh please do! 'The Hobbit' may come out as great independent film on its own but with the same actors it will be much more splendid!^O^
Please Please make them all return! (Yes! Please make the nine walkers return!!!!) >_<

Terrible Idea. It's one thing to put one's own ideas into what the world should look like, but trying to find a way to incorporate actors who's characters aren't in the books is another... In all honesty, the only person who would be able to make a realistic cameo would be Legolas, since he's from Mirkwood.
And as a side note: People will go and see the movie and it will be a great success NOT because of the actors, but because of what it is. I don't believe that making that kind of a claim is a viable one.

Viggo is perfect for the roles of honest and brave heroes. Why couldn't he appear in the role of Bard, a slayer of Smaug. As for Legolas, he could easily appear in the Battle of five armies.

Apologies for sounding like a party pooper, but just a small bit of chronology needs to be taken into account. Aragorn was born in Third Age 2931. And Bilbo and the Dwarves quest to the Lonely Mountain was in 2941, when Aragorn was only TEN years old. A child is hardly ready and able to participate in a dangerous quest!
Moreover, this bit from "The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen" needs to be recalled (page 1057 of the one volume 50th Anniversary edition: "Then Aragorn, being now the Heir of Isildur, was taken with his mother to dwell in the house of Elrond; and Elrond took the place of his father and came to love him as a son of his own. But he was called "Estel," that is "Hope," and his true name and lineage were kept secret at the bidding of Elrond; for the Wise then knew that the Enemy was seeking to discover the Heir of Isildur, if any remained upon earth."
Therefore, when Bilbo Baggins stayed for a while at Rivendell, both going east on his quest and on returning home, two possibilities comes to mind. Either he was not aware of Aragorn at all at that time or obeyed Master Elrond's command that the child's existence be kept secret. Either would explain why Bilbo made no mention of Aragorn in his Memoirs.
I like Marko's suggestion that a better role for Viggo in the "Hobbit" movie would be as Bard the Dragon Slayer. To say nothing of how Viggo is NOWHERE near being ten years old!

I think whereas he was not in the novel - then it's quite strange to include them in the movie. Nevertheless, to see all those from the lord of the rings reunite as the castings for those movies was so suprisley, and astonishly brilliant. I would see the movie without them in it, but I would much rather prefer to see the old cast once again in what I think are the most fastastic books and trilogy.
