Ian Holm as Bilbo BagginsSeems that the rumour that Ian Holm will narrate The Hobbit has found some more solid footing.
At the Weta Cave in New Zealand where Alan Lee was engaged in a book signing, Jack at The Noldor Blog spoke to his elusive "contact" who seemed to seriously imply that Ian Holm's narration of The Hobbit was a foregone conclusion--nearly a sealed deal.
If true, it's not surprising. In addition to portraying Bilbo in The Lord of the Rings, Holm voiced Frodo in the BBC radio drama of The Lord of the Rings made in the early 80s. He has a certain natural voice that lends itself to something like a voiceover--it's not too overpowering, but not expressionless.
I doubt, though, that the film will feature a narrator. I imagine that--if he does do some narration work--it will be more similar to the voiceover Galadriel had in the beginning of Peter Jackson's Fellowship of the Ring: an introduction to the film, but not a persistent voice through out.

It would be wonderful!!! He's a great actor and I instantly saw he can do voiceover narration! I didn't really know him before LOTR, I only heard of him (I live in Romania, so, far from the USA or any other English-speaking country), but I saw he was great!

Actually, he pretty much did a voiceover for FOTR - right near the beginning - he narrates over different scenes in the Shire as he describes the nature of Hobbits.

Meant to add that that scene is only in the Extended Edition.

A full film narrator might not be out of the question...a big difference between the books LOTR and The Hobbit is the voice...in The Hobbit, the narrator is much more of a presence, interacting with the reader at times (a tool Tolkien later regretted, but still...).
