With the films to be released during Christmas 2011, and Christmas 2012, writing must get started soon to begin filming them next year. It took the writers a couple of years to finish the scripts for LOTR, so I imagine there will no uncertain sense of urgency in getting these done ASAP.
Let's hope for an engaging and true-to-the-book script that new fans and old fans alike will love...

The Hobbit would be the best one yet. I hope they make it more accurate to the book. I would love to see their fight with Smaug the Dragon scene. And also, if ever possible, they make the movie for The Silmarillion. It looked like abit complex if they try to make a movie of it as there are many characters and long journeys involved.

I too am looking forward to the Hobbit movie.
With regard to a Silmarillion movie, there may be issues getting film rights. In any event, my opinion is that the Silmarillion as a whole is too vast and somewhat disjointed to make one movie out of. I would suggest picking one major tale from the Silmarillion, probably the tale of Beren and Luthien, and making that into a movie. This would be much more comprehensible to moviegoers. There would be several tie-ins to the Lord of the Rings movies in Galadriel, sister of Finrod Felagund, in Sauron, in the Ring of Barahir, which appears in the Extended edition of The Two Towers, and the mention of Luthien in the Extended edition of The Fellowship of the Ring. Other parts of the Silmarillion could come in through flash-backs, much as the stories of the Last Alliance, the cutting of the One Ring from Sauron's hand, and the death of Isildur are flash-backs in the Lord of the Rings movies. What a wonderful flash-back could be the first meeting of Men with an elf (Finrod Felagund)! Another could be the scene in which the oath of Finrod to aid Barahir and his heirs at need was made in return for Barahir's aid in battle. If such a movie were made and succeeded, several others might be made later from other Silmarillion tales, including the recently published tale of the Children of Hurin (Narn i Hin Hurin), although the ending is admittedly rather dark for a movie that young people would see.

GREAT Peter is doing the Hobbit. I have been praying that he would do the Hobbit to finish off the Lord of the Rings movies. My husband and I belonged to the Lord of the Rings club and our names are listed in the credits on the extended edition of all 3 movies on DVD.
