Lord of the Rings Limited Edition DVDsOn August 29th, New Line Cinema will be releasing three new Lord of the Rings DVDs!Three "The Lord of the Rings Limited Edition" sets, one for each movie, will hit store shelves on August 29. Each two-disc set will include the original theatrical and the extended versions of the film, along with Costa Botes' feature-length documentary on each film's creation.
In July 2001, I saw Costa Botes at a round table film discussion at Azusa Pacific University where he screened a brief amount of his behind-the-scenes footage, none of which made it into the extended DVDs. He told me then that New Line intended on releasing an "Ultimate Edition" in the distant future, so perhaps these are them. These new documentaries will be feature-length, and more "organic", apparently.
Additionally, it's being reported that the DVD will contain both the theatrical and extended editions of the films. How can they do this? By using a "branching" format that gives you a visual cue to view an extended scene if you want to while you're watching the film... which, in my opinion, is definitely not an elegant solution, and may indeed ruin the film itself (the visual cue, that is).
In any case, I'll still end up buying it just for the documentaries...

Hey thanks Jonathan. I'm like you I'll end up buying them just for the documentaries. Have you seen a price range on these yet? That 'branching' concept sounds very odd, and I agree the visual cue could ruin the viewing of them. Would the movie pause until you tell it yes or no to see the extended scene? Very interesting.

Details are still sketchy on exactly how it'll work, but i'd imagine it wouldn't actually pause the film...

I've seen a number of films that have both normal and extended editions on one disc. You would just chose which one you want to view on the menu before you start the movie. If you pick 'theatrical' length then the laser will just skip the extended scenes.

Not worth spending more money on these.
I hardly watched the extra things on the EE versions I have now.
It is just a way to get more money is all.
But thanks for the info all the same.

Okay, I just got this new Limited Edition Set for Christmas this year. I am a big Lord of the Rings fan, but I've always had the tapes and only the DVD for the Two Towers. But this thing, is incredible. Just great, really. The covers, photos, and discs, looking at them is Epic in itself. I have never seen the Extended Editions before, so I'm really excited about that too. The special features and documentaries are quite good as well and this present was the cherry to a great Christmas. I'd recommend it to everyone.
