JRR Tolkien's Webley Mark VI revolver carried at the Battle of the Somme is to go on display next month at London's Imperial War Museum.

Acquired two years ago from the Tolkien Estate, it will be shown at the museum and online, marking the 90th anniversary of the battle.

Tolkien began his work on Middle-earth while in the war serving as a signaller from July to October 1916.

The exhibition will be at www.iwm.org.uk/somme.
