Chapter 1: Childhood

He was born on the cold, stormy night of 23 Thrimidge in the land of the Two Rivers clan. Matrim Calhoun was his given name. His parents, Sarin and Hildi, treated him with fear and almost forsook him that day. He was the first pure Easterling born with blue eyes.

His family was large. He was the sixth child born, fourth among the boys. All told, he had six brothers and three sisters. Darin, Samue and Martin are his elder brothers, Theo, Balad and Arat his younger ones. Jennifer, Rebekah were his older sisters and Faith just a year younger. Living on the outskirts of the Two Rivers lands on the farm built by his father's hands, Mat lived a simple yet hard childhood. Working on the farm and training in the use of weapons, Mat had little time to enjoy his childhood. This explains why he is such a prankster and fun loving person he is to this day.

Mat is tall for an Easterling, standing six feet five inches, though his black hair marks him well enough. There is no doubt he is of Easterling blood. His striking blue eyes have dulled to a gray-blue with age. He was a thin man but years of work with the blade had given him a well-muscled frame. Not well liked by most children his age he turned to books, the sword and the woods for his comfort. He distrusted most people and had few friends.

As Mat grew he watched his brothers go off to war while he worked the farm. His father trained him hard at the sword. He soon mastered many of the forms and became better than his father. By the age of 13 his father had stopped giving him lessons. This was when he began to explore the woods and wilds around his farm. He soon became an expert tracker and hunter, spending all of his free time hunting and exploring. Mat's first kill came one year after he took to the woods. While roaming one day he came across a goblin soldier that had escaped from a battle. The goblin came after Mat thinking he was easy prey. Mat quickly dispatched of the goblin. He then laid his sword on the ground and sat next to the dead beast until the hunting party of men found him. They looked upon his work approvingly and slapped him upon the back. He was then looked upon as a child no more.

News often came of the battles in the west. His older brother had left long ago to help fight. The men of Gondor had captured and killed Samue for treason. Darin had been promoted to Captain after his heroics had saved many men in another battle. Martin had returned home after a year of fighting. He was injured in a battle and had to have his arm amputated. He stayed in his room and brooded most of the time and raged about the men of the west. Mat could never understand his rage though. They were invading these men's homeland. These men fought to protect their families and friends. Mat never voiced these opinions though for his family believed strongly in support of the war. The East was always at war with Gondor for one reason or another. Even simple farmers had to learn the way of the sword in case they were ever called upon to serve in the army.

Mat's schooling was conducted at home and was limited. He learned to read and do basic math. He quickly became friends with the man who ran the library in the near by town, and would make the trip there once a week. His drive to learn was stronger than his desire to the sword. He read every book he could get his hands on, learning much of his heritage and culture. He didn't agree with much the Easterling's did and often distanced himself from news of the wars and politics in general. His fear of what his family would do to him if his real feelings were revealed caused him to school his emotions and feelings.

  3. I agree with Silver Tree. This was good as an introduction. Some dialogue would be great!

  5. I like it. It's creative, and fits your RP character. I like learnign about his background, and you made him a real hero. It's also good to read more about Easterlings.
